A LOST ART FOUND.
(Cor. AMfefctno (Ala.; Hot-Blast]
I had tlu? gootl fortune to meet a gen*
tleman who lias made the grandest and
moat im|M>rtant discovery of any age.
On -the uorth itonnd train to Cin
cinnati vas Mr. Charles Williams, who,
-when a young man before the war,
left Morristown, Pa., after serving
his tibio in a railroad machine
shop, to take charge of a
locomotive on one of our south
ern roads. At the dose of the wur In
went to Konth America to take charge
of some mining engineering on the
Andes. When I mot him he was on his
way hack to his old home after an
absence of thirty yeurs. Miortly before
reaching Cincinnati, when the train
was lea\ itig a station, the engino rati
off the sw.tch. The rain hod softened
tho earth, so that the driving-wheels
sunk in the nind, and every effort to
block up got the engine dee|>er. After
an hours hard work tlio engineer con
cluded to wait for another engine to
help hint on again.
dust then Williams got out to see the
cause of delay. Seeing the engine off
the track Williams wont up telling
everybody to step out of the way, put
outliishund and lifted the engine as
easily as it it hud bren n feather. Ill
an instant the driving wheelss*arteit off
like lightuiuu, eoveritig Williams with
oil thrown out from tho rupidlv revolv
ing rods and oil cups. Kverybody was
frightened, us well us Williams, who
dropped tho locomotive quickly.
The sudden drop]»:ng of tho engine on
the blocking tie engineer had put
tinder it made them fly iu every direc
tion and bent o»o of tho rods hut
fortuuutoly no one was hurt. Tho on-
giuecr, when trying to get the engine
on, had nogleeted to dose the valve, sc
when the engine was lifted off tho
ground, the steam not Sieiug turned off,
the wheels revolv • l like lightning.
Williams got the ustonished etigine<*r
to shut off the steam, and then putting
Jiis hand on tho nookes of tho driving-
wheels ho lifted tho engine on tho track
an easily as if it had henti a pound
weight. During the balance of the trip
Williams was regarded by the engineer
and train hands as a man from hades
instead of South America.
