Also, the bridges of the cottn.y to a great extent were reported in a first-clams condition. Terrell county lias reason to be proud of her ofiicerK from the lowest to the high est for they are always zealous in the dis charge of their respective duties. Hu "uya tlmt In* hns had subscrib ed tn bun for the ro ul up to thin time, $17U0d, and is iu easy reach of enough to swell it up to $'10,000. Dr. Kendrick is indefatigable in hist fi'.rls to make this road a aureus-, and nmiiy sro lidding up hit hands in this enterprise. Maj. llood is 0110 of tho mi st enthusiastic men about this enterprise that we etcr saw. Leonard and Mr. Willio are quite sick, but it is the hope of their ninny friends thai they will soon recover. Prof. J. W. Lowrey, who has recently been confined to his home by sickness, wc*nre glad to see is on our streets again. A mild typo of fever prevails here which readily yields to treatment. The physi cians in this city are warning ull to bo ear* fnl in regard to their fruit diet, which is thought to be the caiiso of much of tho sickness prevailing over the country. The schedule of the Southwestern It lb changes about us often ss docs day and night Tho upw now reaches this p. iu., while tho Macon reaches here about 3 o\ p. Doth trains meet wlmt will tho Ai and it is said is under the incumbrances of a dower, mortgage, etc. It wti sold for cash. Our young friend J. W. Mr. James Thornton of this county was married to Miss Mattie Mansfield of Cal houn county, on the 2&1 of last month. Our congratulations are extended to eaoh. W. K. P. ciiickahawhatchke items. Mr. Harper, of Magnolia Springs, Sum ter county, was in our viilago on last Sat urday visiting relatives. We been! Judge Cisrko’s charge to the grand jury on last Thursday evening; it waa very appropriate, full of logic and common tense. Mr. Tom Durham, of Leary, was in the village a few days ago. Colonel W. G. Simpson was iu :he vil lage, a few days ago, whooping up the Dawson and Albany railroad. Let Yr roll. The colored people of tbia community bad a barbecue near here on Friday last at the doting exercises of their school. We wasn’t present, but were informed that they had a good .dinner nnd a very pleasant time. They also had a school exhibition at night, which we are told was a very enjoyable affair. Early last Saturday morning, while riding out to visit somo of our patients, we met four young gentlemen from Daw son riding leisurely nlong, bound, they said, for a point eight miles below Al bany to attend a wedding. Our base ball club is invited to play a match game on next Friday with tho lUthel club, at their p ay ground, live miles east of here. The farmers are now busily engaged in pulling fodder. They are having rather u hnrd time for the basin ess, on account of so much rain. There is still considerable sickness in this section, and ourprofeK-donal engage ments are very pressing, which makes it Imrd work for ns to get up a very inter esting batch of items for this week. Thero are a great many farmers in tbie section who, while they aro not ablo to take stock ill tho Dawson and Albany railroad, aro willing, if it M ill be any in ducement or help, to give the company tliu right of way through their lands. Wh canH see everything; neither can we be everywhere; consequently, if our friends would bo kiml enough to give us bits of nets of interest that th y may learn, we could make the Chickasaw- hutchce Items more interesting to them and more satisfactory to ourself. Our friend Mr. John Kitchens present ed us with a very fine musk melon the other day, for whioli he lus our thanks. We have received two or three copies ot the Dlutfton Springs, a paper pub lished at Dluflton, Clay county, and ed- ited by Messrs. Brynn nnd llollin. These gentlemen seeui to be laboring zealously for the interest of Blufl'ton and Clay county. Mr. Bryan requested us, through a friend, to write for his paper occasion ally from this point. Wo would bo glad to do so, but owing to pressuro of busi ness at this ftcuHou of tho year, wn must decline, though we may give him koiiio of our thoughts later tn. We would say to our friend W. K. P., of the AmKIHCL'H llKCOHDKIt, that We tried, hut failed, but that we aro going to try agaiu. Mr. T. A. Coleman, of Buford, Ban- dolph county, bos been visiting here fora few days. Mr. Whit Ellis and lady, of Cuthbert, are visiting relatives in this section. W KIlSTKl! IWIM'V. KNOW THYSELF. JornmiFAiLij; August 5.—The seasons continue and the cotton, peoa^and pota toes are doing their best, but we are somewhat uneasy about the worms. We find the cotton fields full ot Dies, some thing like the caudle fly* only we think larger. They are covered with something like down and have green eyes. We don’t know whether they ore tbe caterpil lar fly or not. Can you or any one else tell us? We would like to know. They are never to be secu only late in tbe evening. The corn crop is made and con aidered very fine, but many will find when they gather that their corn will not be near what they thought. Many say thero will he no corn buyers noxt yo.r, but w£ say thcic will l»e more thau the present year, for you will find but few farmers in the country but what will begin to use their *corn as soon as it la hard enough to gather. Another reason U the crop is not near so good aa last year. There will be plenty mode for next year, but will take nearly half the crop for the balance ot this year, and by the time the farmers g -t through with killing hogs for next year many will not have corn enough. Jeooic Savtlle has been quite sick with fever but is tip again. Bobbie Seville has boon quito sick from a lick across his right eye, accidentally done by Tom Du pree. We thought onco be would lose his eye but it is much better and we think will bp all right iu a week or two. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Buchannnn spent lust Thursday and Frienv in the ville. On tho 8th of April last, Capt, Samuel Beni I planted less than j an acre in Early Amber sugar cun*. By the miildlu of July it had tally nmtured and tho fodder pulled making 1UJ bundles of good fodder. Capt. Now that the contracts for grading the A. 1*. vV L. Itailroad are to bo let out, let’s have a squad of croak* rs and growl ers on the line. Tho prospects for a good corn crop may now bo considered as maturing into an assured certainty^ for tiie ruins have been genorotis and plenteous, and tbe outlook for cotton has appreciated greatly during tho last three weeks of warm showery weather. Now that there is so much talk shout magnetic girls, we "rise to remark," tlmt our Lumpkin girls may not be magnetic, hut they are tbe most nttractivo girls in this broad land: and some of them could make a fellow "git." if he was at tho other end of a broomstick. % An Americus gentleman was in town yesterday trying to buy real estate. Tbcro is upon exhibition in Kew York' city a small iron Japanese dragon ol wonderful workmanship. It is tho most noteworthy specimen of ancient work in iron that baa ever left Japan. It is a trembling replilo with a hideous horned head, flanked on cncli side with a sharp wire representing antenna'. Tho dragon, which was made in 1C70 ami is valued nt $3,500, is mode with articulated scales and joints, nnd when grasped at any part of the body it moves along its whole length in a life like way. Its maker was Muncaki, of the famous family of Miyocbin, tho armor- makers, who, sitting on the ground with pincers, could make an iron shirt that could be slipped on like an ordinary shirt. There is un iron eagle in the South Kensington Museum, made by one of tiie same family, and purchased for Hint museum for $5,000. The ilrngon-mnker, who was the twenti eth descended of the founder of tiie family that retained the secret of its skill, is hulieved by connois seurs to have been a better artist than his cousin, the maker ol tbe iron eagle.
