Mr. C. W. Lamar bought it for 9-J

of the first few bales, as far as the
worth of the cotton goes.

tascinallng story, one of the best
from tho author's practiced pen,
will find a multitude of earnest and
appreciative readers. It draws a
sharp contrast botween genuine,
practical religion und its fashion
able substitute, and shows the hol
lowness of a life not based upon
sound principle. The character of
Lois Gladstone is clearly and ef
fectively drawn, and the story of
her experience in the Hurd house
hold, with tlie changes brought
about in it through her qniet bnt
persistent influence, is told with
skill and feeling. There is hardly
a page without its suggestive pas
sage, and wo know of few books
which contain so much that is
really helpful to young girls placed
in position* where self-control,
moral courage unit self-sacrifice are
required. .

The reunion of the Fifth Georgia
Regiment will be held in Macon
on the 21st and 23d of this
month. Among the companies
composing this regiment which
were recruited in this vicinity were
Co. E, Dawson Yolunteers, of Daw
son, and Company G, Schley Rifles,
of Ellaville,
The regiment was formed in
Macon, and went into service in
May, 1861, and was mustered out
of service at Greensboro, X. C., in
May, 1865.
One interesting feature of tlie
programme will be the restoration
of the colors of the regiment by
Capt. Young, of tlie Fifty-seventh
Xcw York regiment. The colors
were captured near Savannah.
A Negro Shot.
Some time ago Mr. Joe. Mize
took a negro ohi of jail by paying
his fine and put him on hit farm
about a mile from this city to work
it out. The negro soon ran away
and began working for a neighbor,
Mrs. Hawkins. Mize sent the
negro word that if he did not pay
the balance of bis fine still due he
would have him locked up. Satur
day morning Will Mize and young
Hawkins started out lor a hunt.
As they were going by the negro’s
cabin Hawkins said he would stop
and tell the negro to get out, ns
they had ordered him off before.
He found the negro inside, who, as
eoon as be saw who Ids visitor was,
raised his pistol and snapped it at
Hawkins. He then saw Mize, and
snapped the pistol at him. As he
raised the pistol Mise fired his gun
at him, the load entering the negro’s
left arm. The negro then started
to run, but turned when he had got
a short distance, and fired at Mize,
the pistol this time going off. Mize
again fired at him and the negro
then ran away. The boys then
went on their way hunting, not
knowing whether the negro was
hurt or not.
Later in the day it was found
out that the negro was seriously
hurt, whether dangerously wo do
not know. It is supposed the negro
thought that Mize and Uawkina
had come to take him back to Jail
when be fired on them.
Colt Show.
The show of colts advertised to
take place in this city on Tuesday
was better attended than wo had

only large but good, and showed
that the farmers of Sumter county
had no occasion to send oflT to
other States for horses If they
would but improve their opportu
nities at home. Wc have seldom
seen a better display of colts, and
arc of tlie opinion that these an
nual shows of colts arc awakening
in our farmers a disposition to

The Shooting at Bronwood.
Friday morning we published a
special from our correspondent at
Bronwood in regard to the shoot-
of a prisoner at that place by a
Deputy U. S. Marshal. We find in
the Macon Telegraph of Saturday
the following particulars of the
affair:
A negro named Clay Brown had
been peddling tobacco through the
country in violation of tuc revenue
laws, and a warrant had been sued
out for his arrest. While on bis
way Wednesday to make other ar
rests Marshal Cash requested
Sheriff Riggin, of Bronwood, to
arrest Brown and have him ready
by tbc time he returned to Bron-
wood. This, It seems, was done and
Brown placed in jail.
On Thursday morning the jailer
and Marshal J. O. Potter carried
Brown Ills breakfast and took nil
the handcuffs. He then locked tilt-
door and went oir to a baseball
match. Returning in ahoutan hour
he found Brown had broken jail
and escaped. Potter then hurried
to Brown's house, about a Imlfmile
distant, and saw Brown standing at
the gate talking to a little girl
but on seeing tlie marshal approach
ing ran off. The marshal pursued
and liclicving that he was almnt to
lose his prisoner, fired intu the air
for the purpose of frightening him.
Brown did not stop, and tho mar
shal then fircil nt Brown, tho Imll
striking him iu the ieg. Thu negro
ran about four hundred yards,
when the marshal fired again, witli
belter aim. Tlie negro then darted
into the woods and the marshal re
turned to town for assistance.
When they returned they found
the negro dead ill tlie woods.
Tin: coroner held an inquest
over the body and rendered a ver
lid to the effect that Brown came
to his death from a gunshot wound.
