A VrOKKlfttt PRESIDENT.
Washington, March 10. — A
prominent Albanian here, speaking
to your correspondent about the
new administration, said to-day:
Mr.Cleveland will immediately de
vote himself to work that be out
lined at Albany, and will not sit
down and wait for events. He has
% plan in his miud for the prosecu
tion of some work that may take
months to complete, and by that
time he dxpects something new
will have occurred to him. The
members of his Cabinet, too, will
.start with him, and they will have
to earn their salaries.”
“Do you think Mr. Cleveland will
be as industrious as he was at A1
bany ?"
“More so,” was the reply. “I
very much doubt whether he will
taka any summer vacation at all,
and if be Goes not, none of the
Cabinet officers will. There will
be no more junketing expeditions
■mb the Tallapoosa or the Dispatch,
"lor I myself have heard Mr. C'leve
land when he was Governor refer
to the bad taste uf such perform
ances. Indeed, I would not be
surprised to see the Dispatch, the
^President's official yacht, turned
•back into the revenue service, as
Mr. Cleveland would not use her a
month in the year, and meantime
she lays here at Washington with
a big stall of officers eating herself
op. Tuese little things receive
Mr. Cleveland’s attention as much
as big things.”
This gentleman, who is a per
sonal friend of the President, says
Mr. Cleveland has a peculiar mind
that is most at rest when he is at
work, and that is one cause of his
extraordinary industry. He says
Mr. Cleveland has a more minute
knowledge of the aflairs of the
.State of New York than any ex-
Governor thereof, and that bis
originally wide knowledge of con-
nlilutional law has been immensely
broadened bv bis study of aflairs
at Albany, indeed, ho has a rare
knowledge of legal principles and
a careful, painstaking mind like
that of John Marshall.
Beiug asked what were Mr.
Cleveland’s amusements, if be had
any, and what books he read for
recreation, this friend of bin replied:
“Mr. Cleveland likes to be alone
with a book, a soft lamp and a good
■cigar. His favorite poet is Watt
Whitman, and be has read and re
read all that he has written. He
also reads the works of William
Black and Charles Reade; also An
thony Trollope, and he has read
some of Bret Harte, but ho Is not
much of a book man, and reads a
novel only occasionally. I do not
know it he is fond of the drama or
not, but he does like good music.”
“Do you think Washington will
make Mr. Cleveland muob of a so
ciety man, like his predecessors?”
“No. His tastes are very quiet,
undemonstrative and domestic. At
• Albany he has given very few re
ceptions, and those only in a per
functory way, as if his station
demanded it. He has often, how
ever, given stag parties, many of
which I have attended. He likes
-to get a snug party of men to in
dulge in a quiet game of whist,
and these aflairs be likes to have as
informal as possible. Daniel Man
ning was one of the best whist play
ers in Albany."
“What does Mr. Cleveland drink?”
“lake all stout men, he likes
'lager beer, especially in summer.
I never saw him drink anything
- else except mineral water, but I
suppose the lager will have to give
place to something more fashiona
ble here in Washington. He
smokes cigars, which he likes
strong, but does not like many of
tbem. I remember once I wanted
him to smoke a cigarette, but
he refused it and indulged in a dis
sertation on the evils of cigarette
smoking.”
Being asked whether he thought
Mr. Cleveland was fond of ladies'
society and whether he might not
get married, this Albanian replied
ne; that Mr. Cleveland was not
much of a ladies’ man, and that he
-thought certain things weighed
upon bis mind which might make
- him rather avoid society, and that
be bad no idea of marrying; hadn’t
time to do so anyway, as ho had so
mueh work on his bands.
Among the people of Washing
ton society Mr. Cleveland is re
garded with a great deal of curi
osity. He certainly is nothing like
cx-President Arthur. Mr. Arthur,
by the way, had bis bed chamber
in the White House got up in ‘-a
•way to kill.” People who have seen
it siy that nothing short ot the
boudoir of a French lady of fash
ion approached it for chic and gen-
■ eral luxury of surroundings. Some
say that he devoted many hours of
■ thought to it when he Urst entered
the White House, while others as
sert that it was the creation of Mr.
■ lionis Tiffany. At any rate ft
knocked out anything of the kind
ever seen here before. Apprecia
ting the character of his successor,
it is said Mr. Arthur had the furni
ture and brie a-brac in this chatn-
l*i carefully packed up and sent
•way, and so as to conceal all evi
effects, had the walls papered in
some more commonplace style.
The room was then refurnished in
the ordinary way of a gentleman’s
private apartment.

line of the Brunswick and Albany
railroad.
Mr. D. E. Gaskin, a well known
citi zen of that village, writes under
date of December 22d
Soon after my marriage, about
four years ago, my wife was strick
en with some trouble peculiar
her sex, which broke down her gen
era! health. In this condition she
was soon after attacked with In
flammatory Rheumatism of such
severe type that it made her a erip
pie. She was reduced in flesh to
sixty-flve pounds, and came very
near losing her life. She was atten
ded by three good physicians who
treated her with some benefit, but
the swelling in her joints never left
her. La9t summer the Rheuma
tism returned in still more severe
and painful form which seemed to
defy the skill of all the doctors.
She would almost go frantic wi
pain, and would lie and scream all
day. A friend of mine, who is an
engineer on the Brunswick & Al
bany railroad, suggested that
should use Swift’s Specific (S.S.S.
which 1 did. After she had taken
one small bottle she was up and
able to walk over the house, and
after taking the six small bottles
site is now able to do any kind of
house work: the swelling has gone
all the pain has left her, and she is
in better health than she ever was.
Tho treatment before using the
Swift's Specific cost me between
$350 to $400, and the six bottles
of S. S. S. cost me six dollars.
It is certainly tho most wonder
ful medicine and the best blood
purifier fn the world. The proprie
tors should let the world know
about it.

wish to caution purchasers in re

their goods. Some carry the lie

are really strong solutions of poi

Minnie Palmer's Stockings.
If there’s one thing in the world
that a woman likes better than an
other it’s silk stoekings. Minnie
Palmer has ’em. She has 240 pairs,
and they are so cleverly contrived
as to look little at the bottom and
big at the top. That is, the feet
are all in dark colors, which gradu
ally develop breadth from the in
step up, and spread away into de
signs ot lacing and embroideries
One of the loveliest pairs she
wore was of cream and garnet, so
exquisitely combined that they
might well bo termed a symphony
in stockings. Queen Elizabeth, in
whose time silk stockings were in
vented, would give poor little Min
nie an awful shaking up should she
suddenly be resurrected into court
life again.
The standard of fine ladylsm
now-a-days is silk stockings, and
the little song and dance actress
has struck fashion at high tide.

OBITUARY. |

Dooly county, Ga., on the 5th day March |

Bagfey, son of Dr. D. and Mrs. C. J. j
Bagley, of Sumter county. Aged twenty-
seven yean, five months and twelve daye.
In many reepecta Baacomb was a re
markable man. As a son, obedient and
dutiful; as a brother, loving and kind; ai
a husband and father, he wea all that
combined to make home happy, loving
to a devotion each as is rarely exhibited.
While be made no open profession of Ihe
religion of the Lord Jesus, yet his course
of conduct through life woe such as to
cause many to emulate him.
Mot many minutes before hie last (re
taining his faculty of memory to the
last) he said to his heart-stricken mother:
“I know that in all things I have not
lived as I should have done; I know and
have felt all the time since I was taken
siok that I should not recover. I would
be glad to live lor the sake of Alice and
Babe; yet I fear not death and the judg
ment, feeling that I shall stand justified
before the Supreme Judge.”
While we weep and mourn the loss bv
death of our dear ones, we have one con
soling reflection, that we can join them
on the other side, where it is the good
pleasure ol our Heavenly Father to call
ns home. Take courage, dear bereft
ones, and strive to so conduct ourselves
that we too may “stand justified' when
that time shall come. A Frienb.
