the HADLEY .STATUE. I . trir.t p»cet.»r»7c«*t of a Bronse | » rl luim is On a Pice*. Irwin'.on Appaal. One of the meat remarkable cases that I ever beard ot, or saw, said a Jones county gentleman to us a few days since, is a negro living on Mr. John McCullough’s place in the upper part of this county. Five years ago be was as black as the ace of spades. At that time small white splotches began to appear on his body which spread and enlarged until now he is a half white man, so far as color goes. He is in sound health, and was never known to have a day of si .-knees. One por tion of his face is white and the other black, which makes him frightful object. The skin is not merely of a yellowish cast, but he is as clear and transparent as that possessed by any Caucasian belle. One entire arm, from the fingertips to the shoulder, has turned while, and it is perfectly easy to trace the blue veins beneath the transparent skin. He weighs 180 pbunds, and farms on Mr. McCullough’s place. He has been offered $100 per month by some enterprising showmen to go with them, but always refuses to entertain any propositions of the kind. “Why don’t you go with them, Clayton?" I asked him one day. "Die nigger ain’t no tool, boss. Dem Yankees jist wanter git me up dar to make! preserves out'n me. I ain’t er gwine a step.” and there he stays. It is certainly a stange freak of nature. When Did It Get There t Fonjrlh Advertiser. Mr. Wiley Britt, residing near Forsyth, exhibited to us the other day a shingle which had been riven from near the centre of a pine tree thirty-two inches in diameter, and in which was imbedded a small bullet. Actual measurement show ed the location of the bullet to be about thirteen inches from the cir cumference of the tree; and by close inspection no trace of its penetration could be seen. How it got there, and how long it bad been there, this deponent sayetb not. Southern Beauty reigns trium phant this year at the national capital. At a late assembly Mrs. Pembroke Jones, of North Caro- linia, Miss Hampton and Miss Keith, of South Carolinia, and Miss Rose Winston, of Memphis, were the acknowledged belles. A coocking kitchen on wheels, easily drawn by ono horse or a mule, is the latest reported novelty. It will cook rations of any kind in the Held for a regiment, and will bake, boil and stew while on the line of march. A solid silver balustrade, which has stood in one of the Mexican churches since the time of Cortex, was torn down not long ago anu taken to the mint and coined, pro ducing 60,000 silver dollars. The official residence of the President of Venexuela is called, in part imitation of our White House, the "Yellow House.” remains that limy do fail. And that should be convincing and should servo as a warning. Three-quarters of tho Wall street operators of to day are striving, not to increase tlioir fortunes, but to get back what they have lost. There is a fascination about winning n few hun dred dollars that overbalances the re gret of losing a few thousand. A man will lose four times running and yet go in tho fifth time with a.1 assurance within him that ho can win back all ho has la. t. If ho chances to win #1,000 after he lias lost $1,<100, lie instantly belies that ho can mako his fortune, lie never loses that belief while ho has $100 remaining, and when tho hundred is broken he repairs to a bucket-shop- having become a ghost of Wall street firm in tho belief that on a cash capital of $10 or $20 ho will rccu|iorato enough to tako him back into a regular broker's office whore he will pilo up the monoy until he is rich aguiu. And so lie gam bles every cont on which he can put hands. . Marriage In Sumatra. [St. Louis Globe-Democrat.) Before tho native institutions of Su matra were suppressed by tho conquor- lig ..uites, there woro three kinds of innrriago in use among tho natives, one in which tho man purchased the woman, ono in which tho woman purchased tho man, and ono in which the transaction was on terms of oquality. Tho first is easily understood and no way novel; the second is somowhat curious. The father of a young woman of high rank looks around for a proper husband for bis daughter, and generally takes him from an inferior family. Tho young man's relations pay a stipulated sum for the honor ho is about to receive, a feast is mado, and from that time “tho good and bad of him,” a peculiar .sumatrar. expression for the better or worso, is vested in his now owners. Ho is between a son and n servant; if ho docs mischief his wifo's family pay his fine; if ho is killed they rcceivo tho blood-money for him, and, whnt is most peculiar, all ho cams by his work be comes their property, and if they got tired of him they can send him nway without a cent, as poor as when ho came. In the allinnco on terms of equality each contributes in nil equal degree to the common stock, and if tho marringo proves inharmonious a separation is ef fected and the goods nnd nil that has been gained by tho common labor are divided o pially between tho partios nnd each departs to seek now amt more con genial bonds. %. IlritUli Cutlery In Cold Weather. (Chicago Tribune.) Ono fatal defect which hastened the death-knell of British cutlory on this side was the fact that the handles, both ivory and horn, were not tempered to resist climatic influence. Though far ther nortli than Chicago, tho climate of (•rent Britain is much milder, and be cause of its oceanic oxposure the atmos phere is moro humid. Knives mounted in Sheffield and received in Chicago wore all right till tho cold wcatbor come, but nights of extreme frigidity proved so disastrous to the British cutlery that ivory, pearl, and horn hnndles would cut up like so much corn in a hopper. lown-town firm bad a night-watch man who heard strango noises in the cutlory department every night, nnd not only believed it to bo the abode of ghosts but actually gavo up his situation from sheer fright. Tho stock was overhauled, and it was found to bo damaged to tho extent of soveral thousand dollars. Even in showcases of retail houses, or in any locality where they would be ex posed to low temperature, tho handles of th iso goods would crack beyond the poss’bility of concealment or repair. One Hundred Year* Old. [Chicago Tribune.] Tde Collego of France, at the recent Elysiau levee in Paris, was headed by a rival of Sir Moses Montetiore, M. Chov- roul, dean of that body, who will be 100 years old next August Hu tills the chair of chemistry, and is at the head of the chemical department of the (iobe- lius. Though he comes from a wine country, ho is a water-drinker. Not withstanding his ago, ho rises at 5 and takes a long matutinal walk in all weathers in the Jarden des i’lantes, where ho lives and attends to his profes sional duties, which are arduous. His father was a doctor. Though he enjoys the present, ho takes infinite pleasure in thinking about the past and recalling the images of most of the celebrated French men and women of the century. He dresses according to the stylo that was in vogno in Charles X's reign, but is too absent-minded to be neat in his apparel. In going to the levee he forgot to put on the white muslin neckcloth which selves him as a cravat. Th* Monsoon's Lightning. [Foreign Letter.) In the plains of India at the com mencement of the monsoon, storms occur in which the lightning runs like snakes all over the sky at the rato of three or four flashes in a second, and the thunder rears without a break for frequently one or two hours at a time. Yet it is very rare that any tree or animal is struok by the electric current. Robert Weidensall: AU branches of the world’s business that amount to anything are seeking for the best men that can be found and employing them at whatever cost Th* Oliost, of Wall Street. Then a cheer rent the air and the foreman shook hands with Robert Cushing, the sculptor, who bad watched the pro ceedings anxiously. “It is all right," he said. The first attempt bad been made to cast a colossal statue requiring four thousand pounds of bronze In a single piece, and it had been successtul. To morrow, when it has cooled off sufficiently, the mould will be broken and the casting disclosed The statue represents Colonel Wil liarn M. Wadley, the late president of the Georgia Central railroad and the Vanderbilt of the South iu heroic size, standing with a scroll bearing a map of his railroad sys •cm. It was paid for by subscrip tions of the employes of bis road and will be set up at the intersec ticn of the principal streets In Macon, Ga. No attempt has ever before been made to cast so large a statue in a single mould, and the wsrk was watched with interest by a number of artists and profes. siorral men. Robert Cushing mod eled the statue. It has taken the company four months to prepare the mould, which contains 1,400 pieces. ” A C’ALI'jo SEURO, .
