He is rather lame in conse quence of an attack of rheumatism- The ladles should not fail to read John R. Shaw’s new advertisement, if they wish to Keep up with the times. Will Fcagin killed nine birds at one shot on Arthur Simmons’ plantation, in Lee county, Thurs day. Quite a number of farmers came to town yesterday. It reminded us of old times to sec the streets so crowded. Call and see that neat, new wagon at Fretwcll & Smith’s shop. Well made, finely finished and hand somely painted. Miniature kites, in the shape of bits of thin paper, furnished amuse ment for the boys during the high wind, yesterday. The road overseer is abroad in the land. It is to be hoped that the public highways will be puc in first-class order. Five or ten new houses are going up around the colored school house. Prince Bros, this week sold two thorough bred Jersey yearling heif ers, one to Douglas Mayes and the other one today Baglcy. Buchanan & Son have had their awning posts painted and sanded, and the loafers are busy getting both off their hands and clothes. Si. Jossey, who has been spend ing some time in Atlanta, baa re turned and is looking a little feeble from the effecta of recent sickness. The eigar trade of Americue is a big thing if the number of drum mers, representing different honsee, who visit ns, is any indication of its aize. Mr. and. Mrs. James Frieker, of Danville, Va., arrived in the city last night and are stopping at the residence of Mr. C. A. Ericker, on Jackson street. A. T. Rogers has bad a unique sign placed in front of his shop. It is a mammoth double barrel shot gun, and looks like it might go off if meddled with. In a lot of green apples, received here a few days ago, there were two that looked exactly like a pair of ducks, the head, breast and beak being clearly defined. As the weather grows warmer the wood men throw on a few more sticks in loading. By this means they are ablo to cry out, “Dollali!” when asked the price. The Americus Recorder been admitted to the list ol first- class papers by being subjected a ten thousand dollar libel suit. Atlanta Constitution. Mr. France Buchanan says that the rain at Buena*Vista, Saturday was one of the hardest, he ever saw fall, and that hailstones as large hen eggs fell at Ellaville. The new rollers and skates have arrived and the A. L. I. skating rink will be open, as usual, at 7:30 o’clock. All invited to come and have your fun every night. A hand plowing for Mr. U. Lockett on Monday, cut off the heads of three rattlesnakes at one clip with the plow. Each snake bad five rattles and a button. The jolly farmers take pleasure in tantalizing us city folks with glowing descriptions of their well filled barns and smoke houses—and we like to be tantalized by them Mrs. M. T. Elam leaves New York for home on the sixth. She brings with her an extraordinary fine line of goods, which will be sold low lor cash. Sec her adver tisement, Tne Bargain Store is issuing checks good for twenty-five cents upon the purchase of five dollars worth of goods. Mr. Cobcn bound to have money in circulation some way, Our contemporary, the Ameri cus Recorder, has been sued for damages to the extent of $10,000, This begins to look like real fame, The future of our contemporary is bright.—Albany News. Mr. C. F. Stanfield and his broth er George have fixed up a private telegraph line between their houses and a few days ago got it in work ing, operation. It is pleasant and instructive amusement. In another column will be found a table giving the rainfall tor the past week and average temperature. It is furnished by Mr. J. E. Bivins and will be published as corrected every Sunday morning. Seed potatoes are rather scarce on account of the drouth during the past season. Sugar cano is rather scarce, but it is to be hoped that farmers can procure sufficient seed to plant largely of each. A little child of Mr. B. M. Rai- ford died Friday night of pneumo nia. The child bad been ill for sev eral days, and its death was not We tender our sym pathies to the bereaved parents. The authorities are building a shanty on the vacant lot opposite Watts’ corner for the purpose of storing gasoline. If the new lamps prove satisfactory they will proba bly be brought into general use. Mr. H. A. Chapman, the good looking editor of the Calhoun Times, gave us a very pleasant call Thursday. He is on Ids way back home from New Orleans, and stopped in Americus to visit rela- tires. The new Presbyterian church ia receiving its finishing touches, and when completed will be the band- ■omeat church edifice in Southwest Georgia, if not in the State. The workmanship is fine and displays the best taste. Aaron Cohen received a letter a few days ago addressed to him in Wide Awake company has re ceived an elegant silver plated short pipe from a Chicago furnish ing house, and the boys pronounce it fine for quick work. It got wet twice on Monday, though, out of six runs. Some thief entered the premises of J. B. Dunn, Saturday night, and carried off several of bis finest hens. Chicken stealing is getting entirely too common, and the next thief who is canght should be made an example of. The grading on the A. P. & L. road is practically finished, and will be completely so next week. They next thing in order is the iron and rolling stock, and it will be put as soon as the necessary ar rangements can be made. Our merchant:! make a pretty large demand upon our advertising columns this morning. They ap preciate the fact that the Recorder is generally read by our people, and take this method of laying their claims before the public. The Americus Recorder having been sued for $10,000 worth of libel, entreats its subscribers to come in and pay up. This would save the work of cutting the cou pons of its bonds during the com ing hot weather.—Griffin News. Mingo Glaze addressed a very pathetic note to Dr. Hall from bis bearding house at the jail yester day, wanting some snake killer and a pencil with rubber on it. He says Sheriff Cobb had his rabbit foot on him, bat it wasn’t worth a cent. Tho workmen on top of the arte sian derrick are able to see most ail that is going on now-a-days. But they have but little more ad vantage in that partucular than a man standing on bis head in a cel lar, for there’s very little going on, As we were compelled to use that dollar we possessed Saturday in paying off tho bands that night, we hope our friends will uurry up and pay us what they are due, in order to pay off that $10,000. Please don’t forget this, as it it a matter of importance to us. , Mr. J. L. Price has returned from Chattanooga after perfecting his arrangements for establishing a warehouse and commission busi ness there. He will remain in the city’ but a few days, when he will leave for his new home, taking his children with him. We hope that success may attend him in his new venture. From the Ellaville correspond ence of the Dawson Appeal we get the following item, which we are inclined to think is a mistake: “It is reported that there is a bank in Americus to wbiob if any of the Schley county people go to get money, they will say to him: Look here, if you expect to put this money in the B. Y. R. R. you can’t get it,” and it is only because hey are not in sympathy with the road. “Jealousy is the poison of the human soul.” Let us have a Test. Americus, April 1st, 1886. Mr. Editor: Nobody should urge special objections if one or more of the Lulu Hurst victims should desire to explain how it was that he or they were compelled to dance a species of Can-Can to the infinite amusement of a hilarious audience; neither should they object to the views expressed as to the nature of the motive power by which the dance was invited.
