counties arc already in a minority,
and the minority continues to grow
smaller and smaller, as successive
counties act. '
Jno.A. Logan is making speeches

VALUE OF SOUTHERN FORESTS.
The apparent money value of
timbered lands in the South does
not appear to be increasing very
rapidly. Such lands are still fre
quently sold at ridiculously low
prices, and large areas arc almost
constantly being bought by North
ern and foreign capitalists ,t what
they consider a mere song.
The real value of these lands,
however, is much gieater than it
was five years ago, although they
may not now command mote in the
market than they would have then
brought. It should not be forgot-
A. brother of President Grover
Cleveland was well known in New
Orleans during the war. He was
the chief clerk of Colonel Sheldon
Sturgeon, who managed the mus
tering anil enlisting and the draft
ing of federal soldiers under Gen
eral Canby in this city early in
18C5. He was a modest but thor
ough business man, and many of
our citizens will rememoer him
kindly on account of the favors and
courtesies received at bis hands.
After the war he went to Nassau
and established a store and hotel.
On his way to New York in a
steamer in 1872 he was drowned.
A Jertev City druggist has on

to six inches thick, measures 18
All the great journals of the city
of New York indorse the reappoint
ment of Postmaster Pearson. The
New York Evening Post gives the
names of sundry leading Democrats
who faroied bis retention. Mayor
Grace, Abram Hewitt and Samuel
J. Tildcn arc among the number.
A Chicago Republican paper
gives vent to this pathetic plaint;
“The slow process of the turning
over of the iceberg goes on. Re
publicans and patriots, Union dc.
fenders and anti-slavery men, Fed.
eral Genera's and abolitionists, civil
service reformers and Northern leg
islatorsare plunging to the bottom,
and Confederates, rebels, K. G. C’s,
kuklux, moonshiners, destroyers of
the nation’s commerce, and enemies
of the nation's party are rising to
the top, sitting in the seats of the
scornful and laughing at the roe to
which it gave battle in 18G0-65,
and before which it was driven into
the last ditch.” How these fel
lows do enjoy getting licked.'
AN Alt EDUCATOR.
The Times, of Savannah, speaks
in the following very sensible man
ner concerning the exposition as
an educator:
The suggestion that heads of
colleges and schools take their
students to the New Orleans Expo
sition ns a means of instructing
them and improving their minds is
sa excellent one. Graphic teach
ing is one of the best known modes
of instruction. Any jierson who
relies wholly on what he learns in
books must necessarily be very im
perfectly taught. His brain and
mind may be crammed full ot what
he reads, and after all he will be,to
« great extent, only a theorist. To
thoroughly understand anything
and to completely grasp it requires
that it be seen as it is in all its
practical bearings and workings.
The mind then receives it in a much
more complete manner than it is
possible for books alone to present
it, and in this way a much more
thorough understanding of the sub
ject is arrived at. Besides this the
mind is enlarged ana developed by
actual sight and contact more than
by theory.
For instance, we may read with
out cessation about the beauties of
machinery, the wonders ef the
mineral and vegetable world, the
curiosities provided by foreign
countries, the improvements in the
manufacture of cotton, and a thou
sand and one other matters ot
which we daily hear; and still there
is only a vague, confused idea con
veyed thereby. Lot the things bj
seen and actually examined, how
ever, and a‘. once they are well un
derstood. In fact there is no doubt
that the graphic modo of teaching
is in every way much more satit-
fretory than any other, hence by
ffirat means theory and practice arc
both combined.
No finer opportunity for this
■yatem of teaching will be afforded
in this generation, than .that now
offered by the New Orleans Expo
sition
chance for acquinng valuable
knowledge at small cost will ever
be presented. The railroads are
all running to New Orleans as ex
cursion rates, and offering every
ftcility for visiting the great expo-
■itiun at little expenae.
at the present rate of destruction
of timber by the turpentine manu
facturers and mill men the forests
of the South will be practically ex
hausted within twenty years. As
timber, especially yellow pine, be
comes scarce, it must appreciate in
value, and no doubt within a few
years well timbered tracts will
bring prices that would now be
considered fabulous.
There arc yet thousands of acres
of timbered iands in Georgia
which have been preserved intact
because they were remote from riv
ers ana railroads. It cannot be
long before the roads will be built to
bring this timber in communication
with our seaports and other mar
kets. It is not strange, therefore,
that syndicates are forming to pur*
chase such lands and develop the
great wealth they bear, or to bold
them for speculation.
There is little doubt that within
a few years good yellow pine tim
ber will be almost as scarce as wal
nut is now in the West. Timber
that now commands from $8 to
$10 per thousand will doubtless
then bring from $20 to $30, and lum
ber will be proportionably higher.
It behooves owners, then, to hold
on ts their investments. They
may lose much by becoming impa
tient and hastening to part with
their possessions—Savannah News.

Henry Ward Beecher is in a very
fair way to become popular in the
South. A day or two ago in Cin
cinnati, after stating that he was
on his way homo from a lecture
tour in the South, he said; “All
the South reminds roc of a bud
ding spring—intellectually, moral
ly, spiritually. Spring has broken
up the winter that has so long
reigned in the South. Everybody
there seems young, and full of life
and energy. The South is at last,
if you don’t mind a Bible phraso,
A strong man awakened, and
ready for the race.’ In all the cen
tres we visited, and they were
nearly all the towns big enough to
pay for a lecture, 1 was struck by
the interest manifested in the edu
cation of the colored people. The
South has before it a greet future,
and will work out its own salva
tion.”
We acknowledge vhe receipt from
Congressman Hardeman of a copy
of bis speech In favor of so amend
ing the bill in favor of temporary
aid to allow an appropriation

The Union Mctalic Cartridge Com

and the Ames Company, at Chico

swords, it is said, for the Russian
government. One dealer said that
the English would scud no orders

been making their own rifles for
some years, but they cannot make
enough to supply the army, should
war be declared.
