We, tlie grand jurors, sworn and
acting this, the regular April term
of Webster Superior court, submit
tlie following, our general present

Through various committees we
have examined in a limited way the
various books, vouohers, etc., of the
different officers of ths county,
In the Ordinary's oltice we find
valid bonds taken in all caseBol
county officers, administrators and
guardians. We find tlie books and
records neatly and so fur as we have
been able to ascertain correctly kept
reflecting much credit*upon the ef
ficient incumbent, Hon. W. H.
Cosby.
The books of the f,'minty Treas
urer show tbnt the ex-Treasurer D.
Ii. Shepherd received from all
sources since last re|iort $5088.89.
Paid out on pro|>er vouchers,
$4258.20. Paid to present incum

present incumbent has paid out on
proper vouchers, $278.81, leaving

judge from their nature are wholly
clerical, which we trust the honor

avoid. He rc|H>rts

discrepancy in tlie |*litioii and

known as Morgan’s Inue. or tlie

thereon at the February term of the
Court of County Commissioners,
Febrttury 5th, 1881).
We have made us thorough exam

as would |>eriuit ot the tax digest.
We lind the work ueutly and cor

to the character and ability of our
efficient and esteemed officer acting
In that capacity.
Having given the books ot the

as tho short time allowed us would

We find from the ’flu Collector’s

We And tne public roads through

Wo recommend that the pro|ier
authorities put it iu proper order at
once. Also we lind that tho public
road leading from Preston to Rich
land by tho way of tlie Morgan
bridge on Kinchafoonoe creek, has
been, and is now, iu our opinion,
Illegally obstructed by a rail fenoe
being built across said road, at or
near the residence of W. B. Stevens,
and at the end of the lane between
W. B. Stevens and G. C. Fudge
plantation*, and running east from
H. B, Morgan’s dwelling. Alio
small portion ot tho public road
leading out by G. C. Fudge from
the above mentioned rood. We
therefore recommend that the Road
Commlseloners, under who** juris
diction the above mentioned roads
are, proceed at once to havo said
obstructions removed.
We And the jaH in good and what
we coneider, safe condition except
one of the cells. We recommend
that a double flooring be put In it
like the one recently completed.
Wo And the court house In lair

Grand Jury room, which needs
some slight repairs. Also the ball
door on South side of court house.
We And the dockets of the various
Justices of the Peace throughout

We recommend the appointment
of J. B. Stapleton and’J. S. Luns

We recommend' that these pre

President Harrteon has issued a
proclamation setting apart April
30th as a day of. thanksgiving for
the past and prayer for the future,
since on Uiot day one hundrt d years
ago George Washington was Inau
gurated Chief Exeoutlreof the new
born republic.
IT 8HOULD COME TO AMERICUS.
The attempt of President Hawk
ins, of the 8. A. M. road, to secure
control of the Atlanta and Florida
road and extend it from Fort Valley
to Cordele should receive the ear
nest and emphatic protest of every
business man and property owner
In Americas, for such a movement
cannot but prove damaging to tbe
Interests of our city. We are aur-
prised that President Hawkins
should contemplate eueh action, for
he Is pledged by his repeated asser
tions to conduct tbe affairs of his
road for the interests of Americus,
It was upon these promises of his
that the people of thle city sub
scribed eo liberally to tbe stock of
his road and have upheld bis hands
In hie effbrts to extend It eastward
and westward. It la because tbe 8.
A. M. road has been regarded aa an
Americus institution that our mer
chants so promptly responded to
hi* appeals to give it their patron
age, even at sometimes serious
Inconvenience in the matter of
delay In receiving freights. It is
because we supposed that the road
was built and wae to be operated In
the Interests of Americus that we
appealed to our people to rally to
its support and even-make sacrifices
to raise tbe money to extend it east
ward. We never had aa idea, nor
did our people, that it would be used
as a means of private gain to tbe in
jury ot our city. It wae tbe energy
and money of the people of Ameri
cus that originally built tbe road,
and it Is their right to protest
against Its being used to- their In
jury.
Tbe road was built to- secure re
lief from monopoly, and- H never
was intended that it should be con
verted into a personal- monopoly.
It was built lor the purpose ot be
ing an Independent outlet lor
Americus and surrounding country
to the sea, and not for the purpose
of swallowing up other roads or aid
ing wealthier cities to find the «amc
outlet.
If the Atlanta and Florida road
la to be extended by the aid of
Americus capital, it should be ex-
udde<4to Amaicujt. JP. eeuld *e-
i-ure as favorable oonneetieo at
Americus as ut Cordele, and would
tuore generally benefit the people
aloDg the line of tbe 8. A M. road.
Americus Is the natursl-NUlroad as
well as commercial centre of this
section, and could give to-the the A.
F., road a greater share ot business
than any other point, it there la
any advantage to lx- gained from
tlie extension of the A. A F. by tbe
S. A. M., then Americus la entitled
to that advantage, for she has fur
nished tho means for theoxtensioa.
Our people should- take proper
measures to impress-upon tbe mind
of President Hawklnt the claims of
Americus and insist upon their rec-
'•gnltlon. We cannot afford to sit
-til and sec tbe means which we
have furnished used to buWd rail
roads nround us, and this is n mat
ter wblcu demands prompt and en
ergetic actiou.
AN EVIDENCE OF^LUCK.
The manner in whlob the people
of Savannah look upon the ruins of
the late disastrous lire ia aa evi
dence of the pluck and energy wbleh
animate the people of Georgia.
Undaunted by disaster, they are
ready to set about building anew,
and building better. It is gratify
ing to note that tbe first estimate of
the loss was too high, and that a
more careful review of tbosituatlon
place* the toes at $700,000 Instead ot
$l,500,000. Of this amount $450,000
is covered by insurance; the loss,
therefore, will not exceed a quarter
of a million, aud in most. Instances
the losers have a snug nucleus of
insurance with wbloh to begin re
building. Already the members ot
tbe Independent Presbyterian
church, aud tbe Guards are discus
sing plans for rebuilding their hand
some edifices, and in a little while
tbe musto of the hammer, saw and
trowel will All the charred territory
which recently resounded with the
roar of conflagration.
