Allen Fort was born near Lump-

was limited to the common schools
of that period. He was raised on a
farm and bus followed that voca

to Lee county, Ga., and 1S22 lie re
moved to Sumtercounty. He went
into the war as second lieutenant In

Assembly, and during liis service
passed the bill which gave Amerl-
cus her admirable system of public
schools. At the end of his term he
declined, on account of 111 health,

1876 he was sent as a delegate from
Georgia to the National Democratic
Convention, which met at St. Louis
and nominated Tilden and Hen
