New Quarters.
The new quarters, in the Recor
der building, for the Western
Union telegraph office were wired
up yesterday by Mr C. E. DeB-
comhs, chief repairer of the 3d dis
trict for the company. Electric
lights have also been placed in the
building, making it one of the pret
tiest and most conveniently arrang
ed offices In the South. The office
fixtures will be moved In during
the next two days.
Serious Hall Storm.
On Sunday afternoon u heavy
rain storm prevailed in this section
of the State. Ill the 15th district,
near Resile, considerable damage
was done by the fall of bail. The
hail stones were of large size and
heat down the crops. Exact details
of the extent of toe storm are not
obtainable, hut it is hell ;ved that
that the damage was confined to the
15th district.

Mr. Jas. Davenport was out yes-
terday soliciting stock for a new
grocery company, to he organized

Mr. Tom Sullivau and Miss Eva
Giddings, were married on Sunday
by Rev. It. F. Williamson, at the
residence of Mr. y'Nap” Cobh in
East Amerlcus. The marriage whs

parties, as only the father of the
groom and scvernl relatives were in

An Old dun.
Mr. Jas. Alexander had an old
gun on the streets yesterday that
■was a curiosity. It is a breech-
loading Hint and steel musket, was
made at Harper’s Ferry in 1801 by
J. II. Hall. It was once the prop
erty of Dr. Albert* Rees, deceased,
and was considered a line gun in the
olden times. Mr. Alexander prizes
it very highly and could hardlv lie
induced to part with it.
The Furniture Factory,
The furniture factory is beiug
rapidly constructed. Contractor J.
P. Joiner states that one hundred
and twenty thousand brick have
been laid. The factory walls will
be entirely of brick instead of part
brick aud frame as at first intended.
Two hundred and llfty thousand
brick will be used in erecting the
structure.

Coroner J. 11. Darker met with an
accident Wednesday afternoon
which will piobably maim him for
life. The accident occurred wliib

dentally struck his left hand. The
weapon was a very sharp oue, and
in tin) single stroke completely sev

We met yesterday an old resi-
denter of Amerlcus, by the name of
J. W. P. Jenks, wlio taught school
here titty-two years ago. He is
greatly surprised to find Amerieus
so large and tlie country uround so
thickly iKipuiuted.
Ho came here from Talbotton in u
small cart, in 1S3S, as that was tlie
nearest stage line to this nart of the
country. H« says that there were
only a few log houses here then.
He lived on what is now known us
McCoy Hill, and taught school in a
small house which stood where tin-

water from a spring across tile street

of his former acquaintances are

Tlie Colored Picnic.
Several thousand negro s pleuiced
at Lcetou park yesterday. Tlieplc-
nic was given by the colored Sun
day schools of this city. All day
long the electric cars were busy
carrying the picnicers to tlie
grounds. A game of ball was play
ed in tlie afternoon between an Al
bany nine and an Amerlcus team.
Tlie Amerieus boys wou an easy
Victory. The score was seventeen
to nine.
Tlie excursion from Montgunery
county yesterday brought over one
hundred visitois. The school chil
dren were at recess at tlie time Hit-

as it passed. Tlie excursionist
were mot at the depot by a number
of citizens, and the barn). A ride
on tlie electric street cars was the

On Sunday night between eight
and nine o’clock twenty barrels of
lime belonging to the contractor
erecting the furniture factory were
destroyed by spontaneous combus
tion. The lime was stored beneatii
a rough shelter near tlie factory
During the heavy rail! on Sunday
afternoon it large quantity of water
found ingress to tlie shed, and
after severul hours mixed witli the
lime. Combustion at once ensued.

was destroyed by fire. Persons liv

the llames, and extinguished them
before serious damage was doue.
The Encaminueut.
The Amerieus Light Infantry
will attend the Augusta encamp
ment with about thirty men. Tlie
ucaiiipment begins the week of
June 15, aud lasts seven days. The
State defrays the railroad expenses,
furnishes tlie tents, and allows
sixty eents a day for each man for
rations. This is the first encamp
ment of Georgia militia men, and
onsiderable interest is being
evinced by tlie soldier boys !n it.
The encampment can but bring
about a greater efficiency in our
State troops, ami it is weli that
