If you doubt that Americus is
booming, just take a walk over the
city and see the Improvements on
every hand. The sound of the saw
and hammer Is heard everywhere,
new buildings are Bpringing up as
If by magic. The large lots are be
ing cut up while suburban proper
ty is laid off Into streets and build
ing sites. It is estimated that
there will he fully 1,000 new houses
built In Americus the coming sum
mer.
While real estate is advancing
very fnst, the prices asked are low,
considering the business and future
of our city. You can buy a lot in
Americus us low as in many towns
with not one-tentli our prosperity
and importance. There is not an
acre of ground in our incorporate
limits but is wortli from $000 to
$i00, it matters not where it is lo
cated. There is no telling where
tile boom will strike, and when onr
land companies begin to place their
property on the market you will see 1
prices bounding upward. In tho j
next two years there is going to be }
some big fortunes made in Ameri- |
cus dirt, anil it matters not where
a man buys, he will reap a rich re
turn on Ills investment.
The street railroad has done a
great deal for Americus in the way
of bringing desirable residence
property into the market, nnd it is
a question of only a few months
when it will ho extended and take
in other portions of the city.
For a long time there was a ma
nia to live near the business center
of town, but tlie street railway has
done away with this cra/.e, and
suburban property will now be built
up. In fact, after the heat and tur
moil or the day, it is a delightful
relief to jump on board the cars
and be transported in a few mo
ments to the refreshing breezes,
balmy atmosphero und pure water
found beyond the confines of brick
and inortar.
The incorporate limits of Ameri
cus extend on'y a mile and quarter,
which is but a short and pleasant
walk after the toil of the day, or by
taking the Btreet cars it is but a few
steps.
There is no rivalry between the
different sections of the city, for
the reason that all are equally de
sirable, and property is advancing
in every direction. Besides, at the
present rate of growth, the resi
dence property inside the corporate
limits will soon be taken up. There
are enough enterprises even now
ou foot to double the population of
Americus within the next two
years, and with the inllux of new
population and capital new enter
prises will be continually inaugu
rated.
Cast your eye around and point
out a town in the South with great
er possibilities. Our railroads give
us cheap and direct transportation
to the priucipal Southern ports, and
also tlie great Northwest. Sur
rounded by he richest farming
country on the face of the globe,
witli easy access to great pine for
ests. commanding trade for sixty
miles around, Americus has all the
elements necessary to make a large
commercial aud manufacturing
centre, and backed by enterprise
and capital, It Is pushing rapidly
toward that goal.
Let our people rejoice, as Indeed
they have cause, for every man who
owns ail acre of Americus dirt has
a small fortune In store. The man
who lays out his surplus capital in
Americus real estate is wise.
A FAIR FIGHT
la What a Democrat Want* in the Lngi«<
lativn Campaign.
Ed. Rkcokdek:—It is generally
rumored that there is an orgauized
ellorttouso the Alliauce of Sumter
county to place a legislative ticket
in the field. Tbe originators of this
movement are acting under cover,
and the e il object is to defeat tho
renomination of vVright ilraily
For what? Because he acted in tlie
last Legislature as he was in duty
bound.
The Democratic party was divided
on the fence question, fhe feuce
men claimed tiiat he was under
pledge to them not to introduce u
stock law bill. Tlie stock law meu,
many of whom voted for him, held
that us lie was the representative of
the party and not of a faction there
of, insisted that he should introduce
the bill. The ouly alternative lie
had was to resign his ollice, or obey
the will of the majority. To have
resigned would liu.'e been unmanly
and he’s not built that way. Both
sides were pressing him, aud the
ouly course left for liiui aud ills
colleague to pursue was to appeal to
the people for instructions, which
they did by asking both sides to
meet them witli petitions. They
could not delay tlie matter aud rel
egate tlie whole matter to iho peo
ple, for one district was under opera
tion of stock law, and th liners of
tlie adjoining districts were contin
ually harrassed aud troubled, and
lawsuits were threatened.
If the fence men thought they
had special claims upon our repre
seututives they should have stood
on their claims and refused to raise
petition; then they would have
forced a square issue. But they
yielded their position und vautage
ground the very moment they act
ed by petition. They ceased tc
stand on their claimed pledges and
risked their ease ou the strength of
their petition
Every one knows tlmt tlie stock
luw petition was very much the
larger, and Brady and Simmons, as
they were in duty hound, intro
duced and had passed a stock luw
for Sumter County.
For the discharge of this duty
Brady is to he slaughtered. Not in
an open tight by the feuce men put
ting out a candidate representing
their views, hut by coyertly trying
to use the Farmers Alliance and a
stock luw man to compass his
defeat.
They can’t use tho Alliauce for
auy such purpose. Suppose tlie
Alliance was to bite at their bait?
How easy would it he for the fence
man, after getting two stock law
men in the Held, to quietly vote for
a fence man when the ranks of the
stock law men are divided.
The stock law men owe it to Mr.
Brady to return him to the legisla
ture. Ho would not have been a
candidate for re-nomination if the
fence men had not made outrageous
and false charges against him of
eolng back on bis pledges and sell
ing out to tlie stock law
advocates for a large ’ money
consideration. His character Is in
tills race. Will the stock law men of
Sumter county sillier him thus
treated? If the fence men feel
aggrieved, why not put up a candi
date representing their views and
defeat Brady with him in a square
fight. They claim they are in the
majority, why not test it and rorev-
ertsettle this difitrence and iet us
ail get together.
The party cannot ullord to he di
vided now. We need harmony
at his now quarters on Cotton Ave
nue, under Hawkins House. He
