We are making the right kind of
a sturt in erecting a furniture fac
tory and buggy works. These In
stitutions will utilize our native
woods, open up new avenues of em
ployment, develop now business,
and swell the commerce of our city.
These factories will be followed by
cooper shops, howl factories, han
die and liames works and other
wood working plants, and render
valuable woods which aro now re
garded as worthless, thus euhunc
iug tlie value of our lands.
One party who has given the sub
ject much study computes that M9
per cent, of our native woods enter
into commerce, while more than a
thousand varieties can he used iu
various lines of manufactures.
There is our pine which is so well
established that an attempt to cite
its uses and avenues would he ab
surd.
Our hickory and locust arc in
great favor with wagou makers.
The magnolia tree for gum mak
ing.
Our beech trees are splendidly
adapted for the manufacture of car
penters’ plains and tools.
Our maple is little Used.
Holly, white aud of tine texture,
is a favorite for flue cabinet work,
also for muking screws, whip han
dles, etc.
The white oak Is now being used
extensively iu cooperages.
Ash, tough, bard and elastic,

manufacturing wagoos for agrlcul

building and for cabinet work
Then, the juniper tree, tbeberrleB

is growing iu favor in the niauufac
ture of wooden ware. It is soft,
light, easily worked, of flne grain
admitting of high finish and pleas
ing hue. When well seasoned, it Is
splendidly adapted for the nianu
fauture of hollow ware.
A tree that is destined to rank
high with wood workers is our com
mon “gum" tree, variously numed
and misnamed. It is sometimes
called “red gum," and again “satin
wood,” frequently "satin walnut.
It (b also called “pepperldge” and
"tupelo.” The wool is white, soft
and light, and does not split read'
ily. Its roots seem to have no
grain. This wood is specially
adapted for making light boxes
fancy scroll work, toys, and for
other purposes where extremely
light wood is required with u free
dom from checks and splits, and
there is plenty of it about Amerlcus,
This gum is now largely used for
door panels in the North and West
oypress being used for the stiles
and mountins. Gum is also said to
be spleudldly adapted for certain
kinds of furniture. Well put to'

cheap but splendid substitute for
