A barbecue and fish fry was given
on Thursday night at Hollis mills,
in Lee county, by Arthur Simmons.
A party of about fifty had a most

Watermelons.
Mr. W. B. Bunkley, of Leesburg,
Lee county, (hipped a oar load of
watermelons to Amerlcus Monday
morning. They sold very fast, and
at reasonable prices. Our truck
farmers ahould not allow another
county adjoining ns to supply our
first watermelons.
Petition to CoL Hard* man.
Capt. Cobb Monday forwarded a
petition to Col. Hardeman, of Ma
con, requesting him to appoint
some day on which he will address
the Democrats of Sumter and ad
joining counties. The petition was
signed by % number of citizens, and
nodonbt he. win make an early
date here.

Monday Officer Smith arrested
John Cummings tor larceny from
the house—stealing a fiddle belong
ing to Mr. J. A. Walker. He was
carried before Judge Pllsbury, tried
and sentenced to twelve months on
tbe cbalngang. He was sent off In
the afternoon to one of the brlok
yards of the Oomulgee Brick Com
pany.

Mr. Henry Solomon, who has
been in Amerlcus for several years,
will shortly leave us to take up his
abode In Albany. He and Mr. G.
H. Tipp will soon open a wholesale
liquor, cigar and tobacco store In

Heavy Hall Storm.
On Saturday evening last a heavy
rain and hall storm passed through
the plantation of Messrs. Heys
Bros., Johnson, and others, four
miles nortbesat of the city, Great
damage was done to their cotton
and corn. The cotton was stripped
of tbe leaves and tbe buds aud blos
soms bruised and torn from the
stalk.
Sad Deatha.
On Sunday morning'last, a little
child, seven years of sge, of Mr.
and Mrs. M. C, Schneider, on Jack-
son street, died of measles. Just
after the first had been shrouded,
another, aged one year, died of the
same disease. The remains of the
two children were carried to Ella-
vlUe on Sunday night, and enterred
at tbe family burial ground on Mon
day morning.

ately on the buildings.

Yesterday at twelve o’clock Sher
iff Bass opened the doors of tbe
■tore of Mr. A. J. Cleghorn and
offered the stock in bulk for sale.
Bidding was quite spirited for a
short time. After dwelling for
several minutes on the bid of five
hundred dollars, tbe stock was
knocked dowu to Mr. J. W. Wheat-
ley for that sum. Some thought
the goods brought a good price,
while others expressed themselves
disappointed at the low figure.

Monday Mr. Lutber C. Bell
purchased of Messrs. Davenport A
Stapleton the store house occupied
by Tom Mitchell, colored, on For
syth street, paying $2,760 for the
same. He has since been offered $100
per front foot for It. The lot fronts
thirty-one feet and runs back sixty-
feet. Mr. Bell refuses to sell, as be
bought tbe property to Improve, and
will shortly add another story to
the building and extend it further
back.

Yesterday Messrs. Johnson, Har-
rold A Hatnil ordered a beautiful
iron frout for the brlok building
which they recently purchased
from the olty. The front will be of
iron, French plate glass, and press
ed brick. The’floor will betaken
out and lowered about a foot, which
will make tbe rooms rnueh prettier
and more convenient. There will
be two store rooms below, a large
and commodious stairway, and airy
rooms above for offices; all sup
plied with gas, eleotrio lights and
water. When the work of Improve
ment is completed it will be one of
tbe handsomest building* In tbe
city.
The corner room has been leased
to Messrs. Berry A Co., who will
open up a wholesale crockery store,
Work will be commenced on tbe
building as soon as a wooden etruct,
ure can be put up for the storage of
the apparatus belonging to tbe fire

Tbe election yesterday for three
members of the Sumter County
Democratic Executive Committee,
from the 27th district, to fill unex-
plred terms, passed off very quietly
indeed, as there was but one ticket
in tbe field, although several votes
for other men were cast. Messrs.
W. K. Bell and BloomBrown man
aged tbe ballots, while Messrs. J. A.'
Ansley, Jr., and J. A. Cobb, Jr., took

Monday Tom Westhernlei, a
colored barber, who wae raised ini
this city, but who is now running a
shop In Cordele, was riding around
the city In company with another
negro by the name of Abe Holliday|
They made several circlet of thJ

freshments. Driving up to the house]
ot one of his friends on Forrest
street, Tom got out, pulled a pistol
out ot bis pocket and (truck the
handle on the'wheel of the buggy,
bolding tbe barrel of the weapon In
bis band. Tbe pistol was discharg
ed, tbe ball passlnc through the
fieaby part of his haud, and entered
hie abdomen. He was placed In the
buggy and carried to the office of
Drs. Hawkins <fc Brooks, where an
examination of tbe (found was
made. The ball was not found, as
the doctors thought best not to I
probe for It. Id the afternoon Tom
was carried to hie grandfather’s
bouse, where be was resting well at
lost reports. The wound is consid
ered a very serious one, but not
necessarily fatal. Tom has always
