general river and harbor bill, there
is no doubt but that it will pass.
Standing near the yard at Mr.
Jonathan Farmers, in Oglethorpe
county, is a red oak tree which
measures 27 feet in circumference
two feet from the ground. Jt Is
hollow, and the recess within is
sufficiently large to accommodate a
half dozen men.
Georgia is ahead of all other
Southern States in the manufacture
of cotton. During tbe last year the
mills in Georgia consnmed 154,000
bales of cotton, though the Augusta
mills were stopped four months on
account of a break in tbe canal.
Georgia is decidedly greatin man

Dooly county is to have a genuine
penitentiary. The Parrot Lumber
Company will work about 150 bands
at their mammoth mills a few miles
north of Cordele. One hundred
convicts have already beeu order
ed to that place. Tram roads will
be built and lumber will be sawed
on a gigantic scale. These convicts
have been at work on the Georgia
Southern railroad, Having com-
pleted that, they will be removed to
Cordele within the next five days
