are reaping many honor* here.
The boy* have the largest com*
pany, numerically, of any in the
encampment.
Their appearance Is most prepos
sessing, and has occasioned much
favorable comment front all sides.
A HIGH COMPLIMENT.
The highest honor possible was
paid to the company at the dress
parade on Monday night.
The entire encampment, consist
ing of six battalions, or thirty-five
companies, were in the field.
Immediately before the dismissal
of the parade, Col. Edward Field,
of the Fourth U. 8. Artillery, who
is acting assistant Adjutant Gen
eral, rode up to Col. Wight, the
commander of the Seventh Battal
ion, and publicly pointing out the
A. L. I., which was Company B, of
the Battalion, asked:
“What company is that?”
“The Amerlcus Light Infantry,”
replied Col. Wight.
“They are the finest appearing
company upon the field,” continued
the Adjutant General.
He then wheeled his horse and
rode to the head of the column. I

the wishes of the county which
honored him with Its unsolicited
support, together with that of nu
merous friends, and has written a
letter of acceptance to the Demo>
crate of Houston county, in which
he announces his intention to make
the race for Governor.

New York, June 18.—A special
to the Herald from K1 Paso, Texas,
sayB a cowboy has arrived at Separ,
a station on the Southern Pacific
road, one hundred miles west of El
Paso, with the report of a terrible
massacre. The cowboy says that he
and ten other men were encamped
on a ranch ten miles north of Separ.
On Monday night they were sur
prised by a band of twenty-five In
dians. The Indians fired Into the
camp, and the cowboy who brings
the Information says he saw three

He managed to elude the Indians
and made his way to Separ. A band
of armed men left Deming and
Ludsburg yesterday in search of the

is not all pleasure.
There are heaps of nard work. The
boys are finding it out.
It Is agreeing with them, how
ever, and therefore all are enjoying
the best of health.
It is mighty hot, and a few mo
ments drill in the sun makes the
perspiration flow.
We are getting about five hours
of drill a day. From seven to nine
squad drills are held. From three
to five In the afternoon the com
pany drills. At six o’clock the
dress parade is held.
It is an enthrllllng sight to wit
ness the assemblage of the twelve
hundred soldiers each night. They
present a fine appearance, and
mnch credit Is reflected upon the
State by the high efficiency which
the companies are showing.
MANY HONORB.
The A. L. I. have made many
friends here. Their handsome ap
pearance has created much favora
ble comment, and words of praise
can be heard on all sides. Capt.
Bagley nas been the recipient of
. many compliments from military
men regarding his command. The
praise of Capt. Fields bestowed on
dress parade Monday, was of the
highest oharaoter. Capt. Fields
a regular army officer and was de
latched to the encampment as in
structor.
CAPT. BAGLEY PRAISED.
Another compliment paid to Capt.
Bagley, was by Col. Mercer, com
mandant of the camp. At a meet
ing of officers,Col. Mercer spoke re
garding the dally reports made to
him by the captains. He stated that
only one officer had rendered what
he considered a perfect report, and
he would recommend them to fol
low it. He then hauded about
Capt. Bagley’s report. Tbit was,
Indeed, a very high compliment,
for many of the captains are old
veterans.
STRAY SHOTS.
A moccasin crawled Into one of
the Oglethorpe Guards’ tents. It
was discovered and killed.
The boys have been hard at work
polishing up their muskets, prepar
atory to the Governor’s Inspection.
It is hard to make an old horse do
the work of a young horse.
A member of the Fort Gaines
Guards, and also an Albany Guard
fainted at dress parade Monday.
Augusta’s electrio cars do not
near equal those of Amerlcus.
The Light Infantry Is color coup
pany of the Seventh Battalion.
Capt. W. M. Hitt Is a constant
attendant at camp.
The reputation of our city Is very
high away fiom home, and on all
sides inquiries regarding prospects
are being made.

the Alabama Midland railroad will
leave on a special train to-night.

ing from Florida, to-night at 11
o’olock, enroute to Savannah,where
they will be entertained to-morrow.

Atlanta, June 17.—This morn
ing the hearing in the case of va
rious bauks against J. B. Tolleson,
the details of which are well-known
to the public, cattle up before Judge
Marshall Glarke..
The counsel for the plaintiffs fail
ed to put In a counter affidavit, and
at 12:30 o’clock Judge Clarke issued
an order releasing Tolleson from
custody, on account of the showing
he had made concerning the assets
of the Mercantile Banking Compa
ny, of which be was president. The
showing, though somewhat obscure
and unsatisfactory, was deemed
sufficiently conclusive to warrant
the action of the court.

versation he said he was going to
work at once to redeem his broken

tion of Northern-born citizens at
Douglassvllle to-day was a decided
success. Three thousand people
were present, of whom about five
hundred were Northern born, rep
resenting every portion of the
State. Governor Gordon was not
present.
The speech of welcome was made
by C. C. Post, of Douglassvllle.
P.esponses were made by Messrs.
Mills and Carrill, President and
Secretary of Northern Society of
Atlanta; Mr. Everett, of Marrietta,
and Major W. L. Glessner, Com
missioner of Immigration.
Resolutions were adopted thank
ing Southern people for kindness
and courtesy received at their
hands.
A committee was appointed to
draw up an address to Northern
people, qf which Mr. Glessner was

By a vote of forty-two to twenty-
five the Senate thla evening passed
the silver bill. An amendment by
Senator Plumb provides for free
coinage, and the bill la consider
bly changed.
Judge Crisp says the federal elec
tlon bill will pass the House, but
that it will die In the Senate. He
denounces it as an outrage. The bill
is tyrannical in the extreme, and
tends to riot and bloodshed. It
simply a legal measure by which
Republican members expect
steal many Southern districts
whether they receive the requisite
number of votes or not, and there-
by perpetuate their party in power.
Friends of the Conger land bill
are trying to get It before the House
and announce that they have been
promised a day. Judge Stewart
says the bill will pass, and he Is
much worried. He has done faith'
ful work.
