From the Brooklyi. Standard-Union.
Those who are amusing them
selves touching the Georgia water
melon trust have not given the
subject sufficient attention to know
the extent of the watermelon busi
ness. It is reported that on one of
tbe railroads leading from Georgia
.Northward there are during the
season for melons, which lasts
about eight weeks, ten trains of
freight cars per day loaded with
melons for the supply of tbe cities
of Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and
Michigan, and Canada. Tbe Geor
gia melon in many respects beats the
world. It frequently reaches tbe
weight of from forty to sixty pounds
and at Its best Is delicious. Before
the melon Is used it should b« cooled
on ice for several hoars so that the
heart may be cold. Those who have
male a study of the melon can tell
whether It is good by the fresh beau
ty of the surface and by the light,
crackling sound, when It is pressed
The best article to brittle, and the
thin, delicate shell spll's before the
knife,revealing the frosty and crim
son honey within. The stories that
watermelons are dangerous food do
not apply to the globular beauties
from Georgia in their peach-bloom
glory. The Georgians say, and It Is
discouraging, that the very best
melons grown In the state are so fra
gile that they cannot be transported
and that those who would enjoy
the top flowers of this wonderful
product of the sun and sand must
go where the exquisite spheres glis
ten among the dewy leaves of tbe
generous vines whose marvelous
distlllment of sweetness is the
dainty distinction of a favored land.
We shall not say the watermelon
trust is designed to derrive tbe
black boys of the South of the most
succulent of their consolations, but
it does seem to be an interference
with tbe freedom of national com
merce. History has not done just
ice to the watermelon of Georgia,
and commerce falls where there are
long-haul restrictions that prevent
the delivery of millions from the
sunlit plains of tbe imperial state
of the South in the markets of Man
hattan.

Score another one for Americus!
Our $100,000 hotel is assured.
The Americus Manufacturing and
Improvement Co. has been moving
forward very slowly toward build
ing the big winter resort hotel, and-
in consequence the doubting
Thomases have been shaking tbelr
heads and solemnly predicting it
would never be built.
But $100,000 hotels are not built
In a day, and the company which to
building this one want to be sure
that that they will have a nice one
—one tSwt will rival the Kimball,
or any other fine Southern hotel,
and have been going forward slowly,
Friday afternoon a meeting of
tbe building committee of the com
pany held an important meeting In
Maj. Speer’s private office in tbe
Bank of Southwest Ga. There the
matter was fully discussed, and the
bids from the different contractors
were carefully studied. They then
adjourned to meet Saturday after
noon.
Saturday afternoon they again
bad a meeting and decided to ac
cept the bid of Mr. James Smith,
of Sparta, Ga., tbe gentleman who
was the successful bidder for the
Public School and City Halt build-
t ings.
The terms of the contract have
not been made public, but enough
is known to assure our people that
tbe hotel will be a fine one, first-
class in every respect, with all the
latest and most Improved appli
ances and fixtures.
It will he built as far as possible
with Americus material. The iron
work will come from our new foun
dry; tbe furniture from our new
factory; tbe brick from tbe Octnul-
gee Brick Co., but it will be impos
sible to build it with Americus
workmen, as they all have tbelr
bauds full, so several hundred
workmen will have to be imported
to do the work.
Mr. Smith will leave this morn
ing for the purpose of placing his
order for the stone for tbe founda
tion, and to make other arrange
ments to vigorously prosecute the
work.
Work on the building will be
commenced as soon as possible, and
it is hoped to have the hotel ready
for tbe coming winter.
The building of this hotel will be
great tblug for Americus. It will
bring thousands of visitors here,
who have only to see our olty to ap
preciate it, and that they will in
vest plenty of surplus cash in our
real estate is a foregone conclusion.
This will redound to the benefit of
all our people iu hundreds of ways.
Truly, Americus is settlug a pace
for her sister cities that is marvel
ous.
