the cotton crop.
Boma Facta About This Tear's Crop.
Aa the cotton crop Is the moat itu-
portaut crop In the South, and one
of the greatest in importance to the
world In general, a large produc
tion of the fleecy staple Is a elgo of
great prosperity throughout the en
tire country.
The crop of last year was second
to the largest oropever made in the
United States, and the crop of this
year bids fair to exceed that of last
The total warehouse receipts at
Amerlcus for last year to October
21st, 1889, amounted to 21,613 bales,
while the warehouse receipts of
this ' year up to October 21st, 1890,
amount to 81,468 bales, making an
increas.e of 9,955 bales over last
year’s crop so far.
There is still a great deal of cot
ton in the fields ready for picking.
A prominent planter, in conversa
tion with one of our reporters yes
terday, said \bat nearly half the
crop was yet to be gathered. If this
is true, the crop of this year will be
enormous ffeyoncl any one’s fondest
anticipations.
The farmers are laboring under
many difficulties in the gathering
of the cotton crop, the principal of
which are the lack of cotton pick
ers.
Th« difficulty in securing cotton
pickers is due to several causes.
The crop of this year Is excep
tionally large, and more bauds are
needed to . pick it than there were
the year previous, and as no more
can be had, consequently there is a
shortage of “pickers.”
Quite a large number of darkles
having farmed for themselves this
year, as they have their own cotton
to pick, have neither time or incli
nation ttjjplck cotton for others.
The large number of faotories.the
great amount of railroad construc
tion, the number of new houses be
ing erected, and hundreds of new
enterprises which were not here
some time ago, are here now, and
by paying good wages for labor they
deprive the farmer of his cotton
pickers, who would rather have a
steady position than to pick potton.
The recent rains have damaged
the crops to a considerable extent
by beating out the open cotton and
making thoground muddy and bog
gy,so that for several days at a time
It was impossible to go into the
fields to pick tho cotton.
It is to hoped, however, that not
withstanding the many difficulties
that have been, and will still be
undergone in the marketing of this
year’s crop, but little of the crop,
will be lost, aud that with a fair
price for cotton nnd the immense
productioh of this year the South,
and, indeed, the whole country,will
bo on a better financial basis this
year and next than It has been be
fore in some time. „

and cause him to be a useful citi

Consistency in politics Is a lost
jewel. Time bring* changes to all?
The man you supported but a short
year, a month, or even a day ago,
may give utterance to principles
that you cannot and will not up
hold. In that case, why not boldly
say so. Truth is better than fiction
at any time, even though It may
hurt. An editor has as much right
to obange the policy of hts paper as
an individual has to seleot the man
whom he will vote for. This Is be
ing recognized, and no great paper
even pretends to be consistent.
The nearer the Congressional
election approaches, the more it is
found that the Republicans have
been at work in every district in
Georgia. If a big vote is not polled
for Crisp on Wednesday of next
week, the Democrats may have sad
excuse to remember The Recor

vote In Sumter should be polled,
no matter wbat other oountles may
do. Insure Judge Crisp a big vote
and you make it impossible for him
to be unseated.
