Atlanta, Oct. 31.—Next W'cd-
uesday the legislature meets'. This
faet is kejit it; view by the political
talk about town, the candidates
impressing it the more forcibly as
the time draws tieurer.
The Seuatorshit) is nearly the ab
sorbing topic. It is talked every
where. The conspicuous part as
signed Pat Calhoun in the Alliance
day programs has almost settled the
conviction that his friends are at
work to make him senator. It lias
looked that way for some time, but
the past day or two has added the
impression ttiat a number of (he
most prominent Alliance leaders
are in sympathy with the move
ment.
Of course the talk about Pat Cal

Capt. J. l'\ Ross is a hustler.
But for him we would have hud
no exhibit at the State Fair.
And, iu truth, the main part of it
came from thatgeiitlemau.
He was ably assisted by many of
our farmers and gibers, but his was
the best part of tile exhibit.
Much praise is also due Miss
Rutherford Iqr her work, and of the
individual prises credited to Sum
ter county, she is icspoiisible for
a large number.
Capt. Ross has been indefatigable
in ids labors to have the county
make a good exhibit, and that lie
succeeded can easily lie seen by
looking over tho premium list.
Below are some of the premiums
awarded to Sumter:
First best display garden vege

First best collection of dried fruits

Charles A. Fricker.
nincy of the big political monopoly
—tlie Al.lance—is calculated to cre
ate some natural suspicion.
There is no discounting the fact
that Pat Calhoun is one of the
braiuiesf youug men iu the South,
and that lie is personally an hon
orable and public spirited man.
But will le that is true, very few
people—except those with political
interests concerned—would like lo
see him in the United States Senate.
The situation recalls the old story
of tlie traveler that stopped late one
evening at the house of a lone
widow, and asked to stay all night.
“No,” said the widow, “I am all
aioue hero.
"But, madnm, I’m a preacher.”
"I’ve no doubt,” said tho widow
“for you look like a good man—but
you're a man.”
And while Pat Calhoun is a good
man, there is perfectly natural and
wholly unavoidable popular dis
trust opposed to his candidacy—not
of the man, perhaps, but of his pro
fession and associations.
Gordon’s friends are more hope
ful of the Governor’s election since
the quasi-candidacy of Pat Cal
houn. They say that the Alliance
vote canuot be delivered to him in
bulk, and that in event he is urged
by the Alliance leaders as their
candidate, enough votes will go to
Gordon to elect him.
Which is a shallow calculation-
very!
It is much more probable, just on
general principles, that the Alli
ance will risk their victory on no
one man’s success until they have
previously ascertained in caucus
that he can be elected.
There are six candidates for
Speaker: Howell, of Fulton, Cal
vin, of Richmond, Fleming, of
Richmond, Berner, of Monroe,
Jackson, of Heard, and Cutts, of
Sumter.
A lot of good men 1
Howell has more than TO votes
pledged, “first, last, and all the
time;” with dozens of Becond-
cholce pledges of votes that must
be gi vi
ballot.
His friends are absolutely confi
dent of his election.
First best light bread.

Second, best and Inrgest display
of breads and cakes, by one lady,

That's a good showing, isn't it?
It shows clearly what sort of an
exhibit old Snmler could , get up.
if everybody would take as much
interest as Captain Ross aud Miss
Rutherford.
Lee couuty also was the homo of
several premium tukers, prominent
amoug whom is Mrs. W. W.
Thompson, who took several first
prizes. Truly, this section of the
State is the Garden spot of the

as to live here, should aud do recog

.Richland, Ga., Nov. 1.—Mr. A.
B. Brown, sr., who lived in the
Green Hill District, four or five
miles from this place, died very
suddenly last night, presumably of
heart d isease. After eating su pper
he seated himself comfortably with
a newspaper, when attention was
directed to him it was ascertained
that death had claimed him as a
victim, seemingly without an effort.
“Uncle Ad” was well and favor
ably known throughout the State,
and his sudden demise will be
learned with sorrow by his hun
dreds of friends. He leaves a num

A Beautiful Drive That Will be Lined
With Fine Bceidocccs.
Much has been said aud written
in Georgia about good roads, but
very little has been done. If the
civilization of a country Ib to be
gauged by the conditions of the
roads, as some have maintained,
then Georgia and the South gen
erally will make but an Indifferent
showing. Tliomaaville, lias how
ever, set a good example to Thomas
county. The city has, at its own
cost, constructed a fine circular
drive thirty feet wide entirely
around Itself. It it an average
distance of two miles from
the center of Thomasvllle,
and about twelve miles in cir
cumference. It Is kept in first-class
driving condition by the city, and
Is known as the “Boulevard.” By
means of it pleasure drivers never
find it necessary to return by the
route they went. There are pleas
ant drives radiating from Thomas-
villein all directions like spokes in
a great wheel. One can drive out
in any one of these to the boulevard
by wbicb they can pass to the next
and then return to the city. The
boulevard is very popular, and la
deattned aome day to be llaed on ita
margins with many beautiful
homes. It is also very fitting that
Thomasvllle should lead her section
in the very important matter of
roads. The boulevard will thus be
worth many times lta coat as an ex
ample alone.
