I lain has not fallen in weeks and the inhabitants are unable to check the spread of the flames. At many places residents have been forced to flee to the open country to save their lives, leaving household goods behind to be burned. The loss will he $1,000,000, and many farmers impoverished. Forest fires are also reported in the mountains about Reading, Pa., and in the vicinity of Ncwberg, X. Y. Raging Fire* in l*enn*ylv>iiiia. Hki.i.kkontk, Pa., May 1.—The forest fires in this section continue to rage with unabated fury. Such confi dence on the part of manufactures and vendors naturally begets confidence In purchasers, and hence it (i 8 that there has grown to be, all over this great country, such an unprecedented demand for, and such implicit confidence in, that most popular liver, blood and lung rem edy known as Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medi cal Discovery, as no other medicine has ever before met with. It is sold by druggists, under a positive guarantee from the manufacturers, that will either benefit or cure in every case of disease for which it is recommended, or the mon^y paid for it will be promptly refunded. It is manu factured by the World’s Dispensary Med ical -Association, of Buffalo, N. Y., a well known and financially solid busi ness corporation. No other responsible manufacturers of medicines h$ve put their remedies to such severe tests as to warrant them to give satisfaction, or re fund the money paid for them. “Gold en Medical Discovery” cures liver com plaint or billiousness, indigestion and dyspepsia, all humors or blood taints, skin diseases, scrofulous sores and tu mors and pulmonary consumption (which is only scrofula of the lungs) if taken in time and given a fair trial. Chronic catarrh in the head, bronchitis and throat disease, are also cured by this most wonderful blood purifier and invigorating tonic. An Incident of the War. It was in the summer of 1804, when tho Confederates were retreating from Atlanta towards Griffin, that an inci dent occurred which Is told as a good joke on Lieut. Josiali Harrell, of Web ster county, to this day. Ho was a lieutenant in the militia, and on the retreat the boys who wore the gray had camped for tho night near De catur. Lieut. Harrell placed his grip sack under his head for a pillow, but waked up during the night and discov ered that it was gone. He was groping about in the dark feeling for Ills grip, when he was suddenly surprised to find himself in a forty-foot well He landed at the bottom in good shape, and the boys beard a doleful sound coming up from the depths. “Boys, oh! hoys! Tell Gen. McCoy that one of his best men is at the bottom of this well.” Just at that time a heavy wagou was passing with a team of mules, and the lines were Liken off and Lieut. Harrell was soon at the top once more, not much worsted from precipitate (light to the bottom of the well, which happened to be dry. He is known all over this section to day as the man who fell in the well. A ThuinasvUle Hotel Closed. Thomahvii.i.k, Ga., ‘ April JO.—The Gulf House, which has been under the management of Phil pot A' Co. since its opening, closed its doors indefinitely yesterday afternoon. The house is, and always has been, very popular with com mercial and railroad men, and was the eating house of the Savannah, Florida and Western railway, but the managers say that it has failed to pay. James Watt, the owner, was unable to say when it would again he opened.
