SOMETHING WRONG.
CONFEDERATE WIDOWS AND THEIR
PENSIONS.
Tin
•r Say* Nearly All the Appll-
Returiied—Including Many
men—Too Much Strictuess—
»«•* Little Good.
Ti| ( . estate of Georgia is pretending to
■ ivi.K* fur Confederate widow*.
Km f,„ni what eati be gleaned liere,
i, ,„,i lining so 1>V a largo majority.
I.nv providing pensions for the
Tin
widows of those serving in the Confed
rate army was passed easily enough,
m l ||,|. | ile|ien<lcnt widows expect
,1 tn realize much therefrom,
lint it seems they were mistaken.
Mr. A. C. Speer, the ordinary of this
■niiiitv. says nearly all applications have
Ijeeti returned, and that it is the most
ilitlicult matter to get an application
acknowledged.
There have been, according to the Or-
ilinarv, many of the dependent widows
.(the county sending in applications
f„r pensions, and nearly all of these
U ve been returned for further proof.
Hi these returned many have had tes-
imnv attached which should cortainiy
tee had a pension granted.
But they were refused, and it looks as
[ the good intended to bo done will not
t established.
Kvery true Georgian lias a deep sym-
athv for tlicso poor widows, and to see
'lent aided is a wislt as gonoral as it is
ilmirable. The law-makers recognized
lis and no doubt Intended to see that
lie wives of our veterans woro not al
me,| tn he in want.
o( course all recognize that there
ui.t lie a sulliclent amount of proof, and
,at there must bo no fraud about
pending the state's money, but still
iere is such a tiling as being too strict.
If what is known here can be taken
. a sample, there is so much dilliculty
innected with the getting of theso
■ininns that tlic law almost amounts to
•tiling.
ordinary Speer gives several examples
must worthy parties, who .have the
>t of testimony to their claims, but
lump application is denied.
Let the state look into this affair, and
e that all worthy parties aro remuner-
cd.
if flic law passed is only to presume
help flic Confederate widows, it is a
amc. and if it lie intended to really
dp them, as all believe, it should be
nendcil. Many of those donied pon-
:n» in this county are known to deservo
cm, and if this be ovorywhero there is
mething radically wrong.

ON TWO CHARGES
A Young Man of GoihI Family Arrested
Yesterday In Cordele
ComiKt.K, May 1.—[Special.]—William
Cottle, a young man who lives at a saw
mill near here, was arrested this morn
ing by Marshal Morris at the instance of
Sheriff Wood, of Schley county, where
he is charged with assault with intent to
murder.
Tlic sheriff of IJooly county was hunt
ing hint at the same time for a misde
meanor charged against him in thiscoun-
ty. Doth sheriffs had him in custody
tiiis morning, but he was carried to Vi
cuna and placed in jail.
Hut little could be learned as to tlic
probability of his being convicted of any
of these charges. He is rather a pleas
ant looking fellow of about 20 years of]
age, and does not look like a criminal.
It is said that his family connections aro
good.
025,000 Worth of Opium.

smuggling ring lost a small fortune yes

seized 1,200 pouuds of choicest opium,
valued at *25,000.
This is the banner seizure in the his
tory of this port and was made on the
steamer China, which arrived early in
the week.
A Common DImhw.
Dyspepsia lias become the most com

are not exempt, attacking the young as
well as the old, caused no doubt from
our mode of living and the too free use

most difficult diseases we have to en
counter. In the last live years I)r. Holt
