I,,mu Island City has a volunteer lire department, consisting of three engines. These acre totally unable to cope with the lire. They threw puny streams on t l, e z ing piles of lumber, and it looked as if lire lire would havo to burn Itself ' (11|t nothing could check its spread iI.omi toward tho Grecnpoint biidgo. liood work, however, was done by eight lugs. Engine fifteen of klyn was then standing at tho ,int end of tho bridge, awaiting ,n emergency and ready to protect Brooklyn buildings. There was also a strong force of police of the Grecnpoint Manhattan avenuesta l be same place. It looked at that time as if tho entire creek front ,,,,1,1 havo to go unless nssistance should b: received from Brooklyn. The volume of smoko was greatly In- reased bv the burning of the hay in Clark ,v Sampson’s hay sheds and ables. Horace E. Burroiigh’s lumber ml and that of the Whiting lumber unpany were also burned, as was Hum- d's building stone works. Vessels moored at the wharves cast off . soon as possible. Tho brigantine mi s. Nkw York, May8.—The rumor that the civil war in Chili was being pro longed by W. IL Grace A Co,, whoso in terests are favorable to the congress party, and Charles It. Flint & Co., who have supported Baltnaceda and tho gov- ernment, was emphatically denied yes terday by the senior partner of each firm.. These firms have been rivals in the South American trade, and have inter ests in Chill that are atTected by tho rev olution. Sometime ago, Flint & Co., sent to Balmaceda two latgo consign ments of arms. In each consignment there wero 350 cases of titles and 750,000 cartridges. These goods were invoiced as being for Rio de Janeiro “in transit,” and were sent by the United States and Brazil mail steamships Advance and Vigilancia. Tho goods wero transfer red at Rio to a steamship bouud for Montevideo, then transferred to Bal- inaceda's two new torpedo cruis ers, the Almiraute Lynch ami the Almi- ranto Condel. Then these torpedo boats fought the battle with the Huascar and Blanco Encalada in Chilian waters. It U also said that arms have been pur chased in New York for tho Congress party and shipped overland to Califor- nia. Hence arose the rumor that rival commercial interests in Now York were responsible for tho prolongation of the war. The Chilian steamer Itata that was siezed on Tuesday night while taking on supplies at San Diego, Cal., was former ly one of the fleet of the South American Steam Navigation Company, of which W. K. Grace & Co. are tho New York agents, Itobhed by Masked Men. Woosteu, Ohio, MayS.—On tho night of August 20, 1800, the farm residence of Michael Shelby, near this city, was forcibly entered by four masked men, who bound and gagged Shelby and his aged wife and stole cash amounting to $12,000. Mrs. Shelby died from nervous prostration brought on by the excite ment of tho robbery. A detective bu reau has just caused the arrest of Henry H. Binckley, his grandson, Harry Webb, and a son, Daniel Binckley, who arc neighbors of the Shelbys. Daniel Binckley was until a few weeks beforo the crime was committed a member of the police force in Kansas City, Mo., where he was discharged. The men will also bo prosecuted for murder. A COOD APPETITE Is essential, not only to the enjoyment of food, but to bodjly health and mental vigor. This priceless boon may be secured by the use of Ayer’s Sarsaparilla. JOHN R. SHAW, 4 Feeling truly grateful for the benefits realized by the use of Ayer’s Sarsaparilla. I gladly offer my testimony in Its favor. For several months 1 had no appetite; wlmt food 1 ate distressed me. 1 was restless at night, and complete prostration of the nervous system seemed imminent. Three bottles of Ayer’s Sarsaparilla cured me.” — Miss A E. Vickery, Dover, N. II. r have been suffering, full two years, from troubles consequent upon a severe fall. My blood became very much impoverished, and I suffered severely from weakness of the system and loss of appetite, when a friend recommended me to try Ayer’s Sarsa- parilla.
