An Americas Han's Unpleasant Predica ment While Traveling. ‘THE CHAMPION” Clothier & Outfitter, It; Forsyth St*. Americas, Ga.. urcpaml to clothe the people of imerieus and vicinity; in *fact whole of 'Southwest Ga. with From the Kouthern part of Sumter county comes the most remarkable re ports, and that too from reliable sources, concerning a beast of non-descript ap pearance, that is playing havoc with the curs of high and low degree wherever he goes. lor some days it lias been evident that some strange fatality w*h besetting the dogs, many of them disappearing under conditions that indicated that they were being devoured, as no traces of them were to bo found where erst while they roamed in careless happiness, unmindful of Tom Watson’s malicious designs against their beatific existence. In the vicinity of Sumter City, a station just below A meric us on the Central railroad, the owners of dogs have been noticing that they were disap pearing at night, amid a series of howls that indicated violence, and when on several occasions owners have rushed | out to protect their canine property j they have been horrified to see them | being attacked ami devoured by a huge animal, which seemed devoid of fear of man or beast so intent was it on seizing its prey. This beast lias been seen by a dozen men, black and white, iu the very act of attacking dogs, and lias, in one or two instances, actually followed its fleeing victims right into a house, and had to be beaten off with chairs to save the dog from being devoured right at its master’s feet. The various accounts of the animal agree in general that it is, in its appear ance, like a monstrous dog so far as con cerns its body, while it has the head, nose and mouth of a wild boar, and lias claws like an eagle on all four feet. The tracks that have been seen by numer ous pcoplo in and around Sumter City, are described as resembling those of a wild turkey, only much larger and more hooked claw's. It is not a wild cat, panther, boar nor any othcr.animal that anybody lias ever seen; for it lias seized and devoured in a twinkling several well trained wild-cat dogs, that had a record of whipping any four-footed varmint that over roamed these woods, bolting them as if they were N'» clothing house South of At- j mere puppies. The monster appears to have an appe tite for dog flesh similar to that which a cat has for a mouse, and will follow | them anywhere regardless of people, \ whom it does not appear to stand in awe ! of at all. The dogs are being devoured j nightly by the score, and the wails of I the disappearing canines can be heard • in every direction. In a few weeks more 1 there will not be one left in that part of | the country, and the alarm is spreading In «>iir line of business we are the , lest the beast cat up not only the dogs, I'ngnized leaders and we propose raa y attac,c ot h°r domestic animals | and children, as it never hesitates to « oiituiiie to carry off the honors. dash right into a house in pursuit of its W bile we possess all the requisites i victims. *• .1 - , . . j Hunting parties are to bo organized neu*v*arv for the success of a legiti- , , . The east bound cannonball passes there about midnight, and when Mr. Lanier went to the depot to hoard the train ho made the very pleasant discov ery that a raving maniac, cn routo to MHIedgeville, was to ho a passenger also. Very naturally Mr. Lanier waited until the poor fellow and Ids attendants boarded the train and then wisely got into tlie next car, which was the last in the train. There were but few passengers aboanl the car, and as Mr Lanier took his seat among thorn he could plainly hear tho yells and curses of tho maniac iu tho car just ahead. The other passengors were soon made aware of the situation, and not a little fear was expressed that tlie lunatic would take a notion to come into their car. Tho train had proceeded but a few miles when suddenly the door was opened, and tho maniac stalked into the car unattended, probably having eluded the vigilance of tho guards who were taking him to the asylum. Hero was a picnic sure enough, and everyone had to stick it out. Tho train was running tldrty or forty miles an hour, and to get past the crazy man anil go to a forward car was a hazardous undertaking. No one knew at what moment the fellow would fly into a rage and scalp tho wholo party, and each pas senger was quite positive that he or sho would bo the first object of at tack.
