lion. John Barrs, a distinguished Call
man. and Councilman Isaac L. Harris,
an anti-Call man, botli of Jacksonville,
had a little tussle in the Governor’s of-
lift*.
ILirrs is a candidate for an appoint
ment as county court solicitor, and he
claims that Harris told lies on him, and
this led to the difficulty. No one was
hurt, as the governor’s office is not a
good place for a fight.
Senator Smith, of St. Augustine, is
out in a card this morning saying lie was
elected on a straight republican ticket
by tlie aid of democratic votes.
Prominent democrats in his county
earnestly requested him to vote against
Call. When the caucus disbanded he,
without solicitation, went to Call’s op
ponent’s and told them they could count
on him in any emergency as his demo
cratic constituents had requested him to
never vote for Call; his whole action was
voluntary and uninfluenced by any dem
ocratic senate.
Americus is to have the Tiffany’s of

That is what those who have the af

i.NUON, June 1.—The celebrated nc-
and the meeting settled down to busi
ness in short order. The following di
rectors were elected, after the recently
granted charter had been accepted and
suitable by-laws adopted: James T
Luther C. Ilell,
R. L. Sullivan, W. E. Murpliey and C. J.
Schneider.
Tlie directors chose these officers:
President, C. R. Whitley: vice-presi
dent, R. L. Sullivan: manager, James T.
Cotney; secretary and treasurer, Luther
C. Hell. With such a lot of officers the
success of the Americus Jewelry com
pany is already assured.
Mr. Whitley is business man of high
repute, lie being secretary and treasurer
of the Americus Grocery company and
the Ocmulgee Hrick company, and a de
cided success as both. Mr.
Sullivan lias had many years ex
experience in the jewelry business
and will give the affairs of the company :
his personal attention. Mr. Cotney, a !
jeweler*of fourteen years standing is j Old F
wonderfully well fitted for the position j
of manager and he will give the business i
ntry and others, better known as tlie
“Haccarat case,” came up to-day be
fore Chief Justice Coolidgo and a spe
cial jury in the royal courts.
The action grows out of tlio charges
made by the defendants against Cum
mings to the effect that ho had cheated
at cards and in consequence of which he
was lampooned by the ultra fashionable.
Prominence is given to the trial owing
to the presence of the prince of Wales,
who is stated as a witness, and of the
princess’ close friendship for the plain
tiff.
In opening the trial the chief justice
stated that it was ids desire that the
prince of Wales should be kept in the
court as little as possible, and he w ished
it remembered that the prince was not
there as a spectator.
Sir James Clarke then opened for the
plaintiff.
