Thomas Oaf lor lias crowned bis long list of sacrifices for Sewatiee by refusing the bishopric of Georgia’ Sewanee is beside itself with excite ment this morning. Hells have been ringing and the most uncontrollable emotion is exhibited on all sides. The students and people vie with each other in attempting to show* their love and devotion to the one man who has thought it worth while to lay his life and talents upon the altar of .Se- wance’s good. With tears In bis eyes Mr. (Jailor told the boys thisfniorning that there were some things that were greater than wealth, than honor, than ambition, and prayed God they would learn that Wesson. He said, too, that the people of the south would find out that Sowanco and her aims were worthy of being i.acri Deed for. The exercises of the university h|ve been suspended, and to-night three hun dred students will give vent to their feelings and testify their abiding love for a man whose heart beats so warmly for them/ Georgia has lost a noble bishop, but the University of the South lias gained a splendid future. Mr. Gailoi's letter to the committee, 9 declinitig to accept the bishopric on the ground that ho felt that duty demanded hint to remain at Sewanee, has just been forwarded. A convention to elect his successor will probably be held iq Atlanta within three weeks. A cyclone passed near Leesburg Fri day afternoon. The furious wind was accompanied by rain and hail and much damage resulted. A mule and a horse I t j i(; a j ar belonging to Hill Daniel, colored, were struck by lightning and instantly killed. The hands who w r ere plowing them had scarcely hitched the animals under tree and ran in a house near by when the fatal stroke came. Lightning also struck the colored Methodist church, 1 ^ car t j ie j tearing the front end entirely away. The barn, stockade and gin house of Mr. K. A. Forrester were blown down, as was a large amount of fencing on his place. Watermelons, cotton and corn on the places of Messrs. K H. Martin, J. W. Forrester, A. H. Duncan, K. A. Forrester and I). A. Kagan, which were in the path of the storm, were well nigh ruined by the bail, wind and rain. Hoads in the track of tho storm were completely blocked by fallen timbers. Mr. It. A. Forrester’s stock had a narrow ch supposed to be nd Sumter City r> bob up serenely, much to f the people in that neighbor hood. Dogs and the like continue to show- up only as a pile of ghastly bones, with now and then a piece of skin to show that the supposed-to-be-liyena had satis-f lied bis appetite with them. Senator Colquitt is just back from New York, where he has been in consul tation with Governor Hill, and taking an insight into politics generally. When an interviewer asked him, on his return, os to Judge Crisp’s chances for the speakership, ho said: r il Judge Crisp is being talked of very much In New York. Ho is recognized by them as a man of eminent ability nud thorough qualifications for spoaker. I have no doubt but that tho New York delegation will vote for him. It seemk to be tho impression throughout the north that he will ho elected.” The.llca«o» Why. * “Amon J.
