Judge Yonkh state congi York many sachems alw candidates Ciisp ; both address th.e wi man for the speake; will no doubt be sel< candidate. People are beginning to talk of the places where the democratic national convention may be held next summei it is claimed that C hairman Price the national committee, has expressed a preference for New York or Chicago, on the idea that the bigger the town the bigger the crowd. New York has completed the Madison square gardeu, which is hig enough to hold any body of politicians who may In* brought together. Detroit has been mentioned as a suita ble city for the gathering of the dome- cratic host, and it is understood that Don Dickinson, Mr. Cleveland’s late postmaster general, is actively working in tlie.inteiest of the Michigan metropo lis. He promises that a suitable wig wam will ho erected without expense to the national committee and hig enough to hold everybody who wants to attend. Representative iSptingcr, .Senator 1'ti mer and other Illinois democrats dec that Chicago is the place because tli is a doubtful state, but Chicago w ill hardly be chosen on account of the World's fair being located there, an en terprise that is being run exclusively by the republican machine. The California democrats are disposed to again urge San Francisco on the at tention of the national committee. The California state central committee have intimated that they will pay all the expenses of •delegates' railroad fare and lintel bills, so that the distance of that point may not be urged as an ob jection. They claim additionally that the “slope” is doubtful, and that the holding of the convention in San Frau- cisco would mako the Pacilic states cer tain for the democratic nominees. Superintendent Porter is just now en gaged in purging the census office of hundreds of temporarily appointed clerks, whose duties have about com pleted. lie has had employed some 3,000 people altogether, but after July 1 the number will he reduced one-half. The superintendent claims that much of the work of the bureau has been com pleted and that his appropriation is run ning low, hence this action is rendered imperative. These dismissals have been accompa nied with many scenes of distress. Large numbers of the emoloyees have been tempted to come here from their distant homes to take places in the cen sus bureau, hoping for something more permanent to turn up. These hopes have been disappointed, and as their salaries have uot been sufficiently large -to pliable them to save, there are num bers of them who will have to appeal to friends and relatives at home for the means to return. It is simply another illustration of the uncertainty of Wash ington existence when based on a gov ernment salary. It Is now officially understood that old Fred Douglass wfll not return to Hayti in an official capacity, when once he reaches the United States. Douglass has been a thorn in the Uesh of the ad ministration, and there were no tears shed when it was announced that he would resign as soon as ho reached this city. Secretary Foster concluded not to go to Ohio. Ho had his grip packed and his ticket purchased, but at the eleventh hour concluded not to involvo himself in the fierce family light now going on at Columbus. It is the impression here that Foraker has a death grip on the convention and it would be of no practical value to have Calico Charlie become a factor in the quarrel. The administration, of course, is in sympathy with Sherman, but the status of allairs at Columbus moves Harrison to hold Foster back and, for the present at least, the policy w ill bo to “hands off.” Airs. Harrison will move down to the Capo May cottage to-morrow. Yester day the white house steward and some servants were sent down to put the ex ecutive cottago in order. C„ Juno 18.—It was noted in Thk Time—Becomier a week ago that a movement was on foot by the northern board of trustees of Diddle university, colored, of this city, to man the institution with colored professors. The World says: “The republican cry is McKinley and high taxes. Tin- struggle will be on the issues of the pres ent tariff law. The people of Ohio have already passed on the issue, electing fourteen democratic congressmen to seven republicans, it is not probable that their experiences under the law have changed the convictions of Ohio voters.” The Tribune declares that “the con vention did good work. The rivalry of the leaders was put aside to a perfect harmonious union, which will make the party irrasistable. McELREE’S WINE OF CARDUI for Weak Nerve*. Kipio ll Curried Off Ills Child. Baltimore, Md , June 18.—A sensa tional scene consequent upon a legal contest for the possession of a child was enacted in court here to-day. Hen ry A. Kippell and Mary E. Kippcll were married in Haiti more about -Jive year ago. Kippell is tbe Atlanta, (Ga.) agent for the I*. F. Collier Publishing Company. Last January Mrs. Kippell sued for absolute divorce, and ponding litigation was given alimony and £12 per month additional for the child pro vided it remained under the jurisdiction of the Georgia court. • Mrs. Kippell came to Haiti more, and on account of this contempt of court the father was granted custody of the child and came here to get possession. Iu the court to-day the judge decided uot to interfere in the ruling of the Georgia court and awarded the child to the father. The mother agreed to go back with the child, but Kippell re fused to let her go. Tbe mother then snatched up the child and ran around the court pursued by an officer. She was finally forced to release it. The little girl screamed when taken to the father and tried to elude his grasp, but he picked her up and carried her away crying as if her heart would break. McELREE’S WINE OF CARDUI for Weak Nerve*. Euml Costly lu Chill. New York, June 18.—The Herald's Iquique special cable says: The demand for provisions keeps prices up iu spite of recent heavy im portations from San Francisco. Hal- maccedu has prohibited shipments from the south to ports held by tbe congres- sionalists, and the merchants naturally are looking to California to keep up the supply. The United States cruisers San Fran cisco and Baltimore, will leave Iquique to-day. The Haiti more goes to Callos. The San Francisco will return to Iquique on Sunday. fifty* WINE OF CARDUI. a Tonic for Women. Citpsizrd l>y a Squall. City of Mexico, June 18.—Many cases of yellow fever have broken out in Vera Cruz. ance is his unreserved endorsement of the Blaine doctrine of reciprocity, iu ad-1 VQcacy of which he follows the natural leader of all of our people.” The Press predicts the election of Me-! Kinley by .">0,000 majority. The Morning Advertiser thinks that McKinley's nomination was both proper j and logical. As the putative father of i the present tariff .let he is entitled to stand or fajl. lie was defeated for con gress last year in a strong democratic j listrictand it is his right to appeal to | the people. It will be a glorious light. Should Mr. Campbell be renominated nd win there will be nothing to bar bis -ay to a vice-presidential nomination. The stakes’arc great on both sides, and upon the Ohio election will depend the shaping of presidential polities in “1*2.” The Times moralizes thus: “Brag is a good dog, but Hold Fast is a better.” i The republicans of Ohio, with the evi-j dent consciousness of opening the cam- 1 paign of ’92, started out yesterday with “Brag,” and left “Hold Fast” to follow as he chooses. They took McKinley for their candidate and McKinleyism for their platform and left Serifitor Sher man. The choice of McKinley was a proela- mation that tne campaign for next year j was ojiencd. It is intended to make j McKinley the next governor of Ohio and j Foraker the next senator, and, if Colonel Conger’s prediction is to be verified, the next republican candidate for president will not be Mr. Harrison, but Major McKinley.” The Sun lias not a line or a syllable on the subject of Ohio polities. Pittsburg, I*a., June 18.—The Union station all day yesterday and to-day lias been crowded with incurables on their way home from Father Mellinger’s chapel and residence on Troy Hill. The majority of these unfortunates are a pittifully-disappointed lot. They came here firmly believing that the noted priest possessed supernatural healing powers, though he has never made such claims himself. Most of them were very poor people, who had spent their last money to make the trip to Troy Hill. Seme were carried to their trains on stretchers, while others came to the depot on crutches and wheel chairs. Father Mollinger was a very busy man yesterday. About one thousand of his patients were escorted into his presence before their departure for his final blessing. He will not complete the re- ligioitsffeature of uis treatment until Wednesday. While a great majority of the patients have been but lit'.le benefitted, others report what seem like almost miracu lous cures. BEE HIVE Kid ridge's drugstores ParJow !, "DOCTORS J. II. AND A. R.
