Webster Wimberly was the victim
a terrible accident early Saturday morn
i»g'
That lie was not killed outright and
bis body ground into a shapeless mass,
is a mystery.
It was the same old story “asleep on
the track,” and tiiat the terrible results
of the accident were not even more ap
palling is well-nigh inexplicable. Wim
berly is 23 years old, and has been em
ployed alternately by the S., A. & SI.
and the Central railroads in the yards in
this city.
It is not known which road ho was
working for yesterday, but the accident
which camo so near costing him his life
occurred on the Central road, opposite
the guano factory.
Wimberly was walking along the
tracks between three and four o’clock
yesterday morning, when becoming
tired be sat down upon tho end of
cross-tie to rest.
The rest thus secured will last him
long time, if it does not result in a per
manent "tie-up."
As he sat there in the early hours of
the morning his eyes grew heavy, and
ere he knew it his head fell forward be
tween his knees and lie slept. Uow long
he slept he does not know, but ho dis
tinctly recollects his sudden awakening,
This took place in a ditch about
twenty foot from the railroad track, and
came upon him all in a heap.
While Wimberly slept a fast freight
came thundoring down the road, and
notwithstanding the signals which are
always whistled at this particular spot,
ho knew nothing until tire entire train
had gone by and was fast disappering in
the distance.
From tho naturo of tho torriblo wounds
indicted the supposition is that the man
was struck by the steps of the caboose
on tho rear of the train. The ugliest
his'wounds is a frightful cut, nearly :
foot in length and sovoral inches deep
which extended along the back, beneath
the left shoulder. Besides this his
arm was frightfully mangled, the splin
tcred bono being driven through
skin, presenting a ghastly spectacle,
A, Mangled nigh unto;deathas (he|[ was.

This is the way
with the Ball corset: if you
want ease and shapeliness,
you buy it—but you don’t
keep it unless you like it.
After two or three weeks’
wear, you can return it and
have your money.
Comfort isn’t all of it
though. Soft Eyelets, and
“bones” that can’t break or
kink—Ball’s corsets have
both of these.
For tale by GEO. D. WHEATLEY.
i call
Wimberly managed to drag himself
his home, where medical attention £was
promptly rendered.
Dr. G. T. Miller responded to the
and the wounded man was Boon made
comfortablo as the nature of bis wounds
would admit. His injuries were terrible
indeed, but Dr. Miller believes that,
with careful attention Wimberly will
pull through ail right.
There is no doubt but that the acci
dent was the result of the man's own
carelessness, and, therefore, the road
is in no wise to blame therefor. Engines
entering or leaving the city always give
the required whistle signals at the road
crossings there, and Wimberly was cer
tainly a heavy sleeper not to havo heard
these blasts,
At any rate, should ho recover he will
doubtless select a softer and safor bed
than a cross-tie in futureiwlien ho foels
like snoozing.
