WYNNE’S SHORTAGE
IN CONNECTION WITH THE ALU
ANCE EXCHANGE.
President Peek's Statement Not Sub.t lint I
atcd by the Books of the Alliance Kx-
change—The Exchange Lost #5,000 Last
Year—Importaut Figures.
Atlanta, August 14.—It looks as If
Agent J. O. Wynne has been made a
ffcape-goat for the Alliance Exchange.
And future developments will probably
carry out this theory.
President Peek made a statement in
the morning paper which is flatly con
tradicted by his own books.
The exchange, by President Peek’s re
port, made ten thousand dollars last
year. The truth is it lost five thousand
dollars.
There is no doubt but that Agent
Wynne could a tale unfold, and he will
very likely do it if a criminal prosecu
tion is pushed. For this reason Presi
dent Peek may decide to let matters
alone.
Yesterday it was stated that the
bondsmen refused to make good the
shortage, on the ground that President
Peek deceived them as to Mr. Wynne’s
accounts when the second bond was
executed; that at that time Mr. Wynne
was $10,000 short.
President Peek says that the short
age at that time was only about $3,000,
and be didn’t know about it because Mr.
Wynne's notes were charged up as cash.
Just here President Peek’s own books
talk:
On April 10, 1800, J. O. Wynne is
credited with a note to the exchange for
$2,007.08. The word “note” is written
plainly as could be.
On July 10, 1800, he Is credited with a
“note” for $201>0.02.
On October 01, 1800, the end of the
fiscal year, Wynne gave an additional
“note,” so entered in the books of the
exchange, for $4,289.20. This last is en
tered in the hooks as a “noto to balance
account for that year.” All this was
plainly wiitten out, and was there when
President Peck made his “investiga
tion” and reported to the bondsmen
that Mr. Wynne’s accounts were all
right.
This makes Mr. Wynne’s shortage,
covered by notes to the exchange,
$9,287.20 when President Peek made
that report.
Hut President Peek says it was only
three thousand, and these figures are
pounced upon because Mr. Wynne sub
sequcntly paid about six thousand dol
lars.
After tho payment of all theso notes
Wynne was still owing $3,900 on his
shortage for the fiscal year ending Octo
ber 31,1890.
According to these figures Wyuno’s
bondsmen could not, under any circum
stances, bo held for more than $3,900 ou
his shortage for the first year.
As to the shortage for the secoud fis
cal year, the bondsmen declare they are
not liable, as tho bond is made iuvalid
on account of a misstatoraentfrom Pres
ideut Peck.
But the bondsmen will not even pay
the $3,900, and they say they will show
sufficient reasons for not doing so when
the propor time comes.
In the face of all these interesting
features Mr. Wynne has doubtless not
told all he knows about the alliance ex
change and its management.
He is probably waiting for President
Peek to mako a move.
Will the president move?
Happy llooslere.
Wm. Timmons, postmasterol Idaville,
lud., writes: “Electric Hitters has done
moro for me than all other medicines
combined, for that bad feeling arising
from kidney and liver trouble.” John
Leslie, farmer and stockman, of same
place, says: “Fiud Electric Bitters to
bo the best kidney and liver medicine,
made me feel like a now man.” J. W.
Gardner, hardware merchant, same
town, says: Electric Bitters is just the
thing for a man who is all run down and
non’t care whether he lives or dies; he
found new strength, good appetite and
felt just like he had a new lease ou life.

He Easily Prove* HI- Innocence and U
Cleared of the Charge of Arson.
Shortly after the fire which burned a
large portion of Buena Vista, in July
last, Mr. J. L. Wilson, one of the par
ties burned out, was arrested, charged
with burning the buildings.
A case of shoes from Mr. Wilson’s
store was found in a negro house near
bis plantation a few miles from town,
and other suspicious circumstances, to
gether with a heavy insurance, led the
people to believe that Mr. Wilson was
guilty of setting fire to his store. He
was arrested, but gave bond, and the
case came up before the superior court,
which met in that place this week.
At the time of the arrest there was
considerable feeling against Mr. Wilson,
and many people thought him guilty;
but on the trial he easily showed that
the case of shoes found In the negro
house were some that he had sold to a
merchant at Pineville, and had sent
them out by the negro the day before.
It was also proven that the fire did not
originate in his housc,butiuau adjoining
store; and besides this, Mr. Wilson
proved a clear alibi, as it was shown
where he was from 0 o’clock in tho even
ing until the time of the fire.
The proof of his innocence was so
overwhelming that ho was promptly dls
charged at the conclusion of the testi
mony. The case created considerable
interest throughout tho county, and the
people feel that a great wrong has been
done Mr. Wilson, who belongs to ono of
the best families iu the county.
Coming to the Front.
Among the coming firms of the city
may be mentioned one composed of two
of our brightest and steadiest young
men, Messrs. Ashley Thompson and U.
G. Anderson, who are to occupy a beau
tiful store in the new hotel on Septem
ber 1.
Thompson A Anderson are making
every preparation to make their store
one of the most attractive ever seen in
Georgia. A special tiled floor of exquis
ite beauty will be laid in their store, and
a burglar prrof vault will give ample
security to their valuables, while the
gas and electric chandeliers combined
will be of rare beauty.
As evidence of their wide-awake style
of business, it may be mentioned that
they have been awarded the contract for
supplying the silverware for the now
hotel, .and will also furnish' tho clocks
that will grace the oflice, parlor and din
ing-room.
Mr. Anderson has been north some
time selecting the fixtures, as well as the
stock, and the former were shipped on
the 13th.
Look out for the display of their open
ing day about September 5. A special
announcement will be made in due time.
