Keep out
disease by keeping in healthy ac
tion the liver, stomach ami bowels.
There's a pleasant and a sure wav
of doinjs it. It’s with Dr. I’iercc’a
Pleasant Pellets. They’re the best
Liver Pill ever made, and a prompt
and effective remedy for Sick
Headache, Bilious Headache, Con
stipation, Indigestion, Bilious At
tacks, and all derangements of the
stomach, liver and bowels. They
cleanse and renovate the system,
quietly but thoroughly. They reg
ulate the system, too — they don’t
upset it, like the old-fashioned pills.
These are purely vegetable and per
fectly harmless. One “ Pellet ” a
dose. They’re the easiest to take,
and the mildest in operation—the
smallest in size, but tho most effi
cient in their work.
They’re tho cheapest pill you can
buy, because they’re guaranteed to
give satisfaction, or your money is
returned.
You only pay for the good you
get.
Can you ask more ?
That’s the peculiar plan all Dr.
Pierce’s medicines are sold on.
This is the way
with the Ball corset: if you
want ease and shapeliness,
you buy it—but you don’t
keep it unless you like it.
After two or three weeks’
wear, you can return it and
have your money.
Comfort isn’t all of It
though. Soft Eyelets, and
“bones” that can’t break or
kink—Ball’s corsets haye
Loth of these.

THE LOS ANGELES EXPRESS HELD
UP BY ROBBERS.
! Two Matkcd Mon Slop n Train In Oalifor-

I'xpre*— Me*»oncer Make Them Take to
the Wend-.
Sax Fi:axc im o, Sept. 4.—The Los
Angeles express was held np by two
masked men, a few miles south of
Modesto, last night. The robbers
boarded tho train at Ceres and com
pelled Engineer Neff and Fireman Wal
lace to extinguish tho headlight and till
the boiler with water. Then they made
them go down to the express car and
ordered it opened. Conductor Roche
and lirakeman Fox were in tho front
car and at once went out on the platform
ami looked out on each side of the car.
At the sight of the conductor’s lantern
ono of tho robbers called out for them to
go back, til ing a shot at them. The
conductor set the lantern hack and fired
two shots at tho robbers.
The conductor at once went back into
the car and sought Detective Len Har
ris of Los Angeles, and Detective Law-
son, who chanced to he on tho train.
Harris got out of the ear on tho west
side and walked to where the robbers,
who had gone over to that side of the
express car, were. When about two
car lengths from the express car, Harris
opened tiro with a revolver, sending
two shots in their direction. Tho rob
bers returned the fire, fil ing three shots,
all of which took effect, hitting Harris
in tho neck and over the left eye.
Meanwhile the robbers compelled En
gineer Neff to hold a torch, while
Fireman Wallace worked at tho
door. They called several times for
tho express messenger and his as
sistant Charles, to open the door and
coino out, claiming that they would not
hurt them, but they refused to open tho
door. A bomb exploded against the
door, shattering the beams, and making
an opening large enough for them to en
ter, but shooting by Harris and also the
shots fired during the affray by IJrake-
man Fox, evidently scared them off, as
they left without securing any treasure.
Harrison was taken to Merced, where he
is dying. As soon as tho news of the
ittem’pted robbery reached Merced, a
special train started for tho scene, bear
ing ofliccrs and a possoof sixty men,who
arc now in pursuit. Ofliccrs also started
from Milan, Modesto, Merced and La-
tlirop.
