THKOl'OH AN AWNING.
Au Officer in Search of llnrglar. Su.toln.
Painful Iujurles.
Birmingham, Ala., September 11.—
Shortly after 1 o'clock this morning, An
drew Johnson, employed by the Ala
bama Great Southern railroad as a
special officer, fell through an awning at
Avenue A and Twentieth street, sus
taining painful injuries in bis head and
right side. When lie struck the side
walk his revolver was discharged, the
report of which drew Officer Swaim to
the spot. The officer took the injured
man to a friend's private room, fro
which he was taken at once to the
hospital of United Charities.
Johnson was in the saloon at the cor
ner of avenue A and Twentieth street,
and whilo in there heard suspicious
sounds from the rear. Believing that
there were burglars around he drew his
revolver and proceeded to investigate.
Not seeing any one on the ground he
mounted to the roof of the low, one-
story building facing Twentieth street,
and walked towards the front. When
he came to the awning, lie thought it
was wood, but tire material was patent
paper, and when Johnson stepped on it,
the roof gave way and he fell to the
ground. It is feared his injuries are
serious.
