2 THE AMERICUS WEEKLY TIMES-RECORDER: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1891, A MALICIOUS RUMOR, AND ONE WHICH HAS NO FOUNDA TION IN FACT. A few years ago, when under the management of the genial and aesthetic Major Belknap, the Central railroad began to plant grass plats at or near its various depots, Major Belknap jestingly remarked: “If the agents don't raise grass, we will raise the agents " The raising of grass might be advan tageously started by the Southwestern Division of the Central all along every foot of its dusty line; for the experience of the S. F. A W. In raising grass along its road bed is certainly most satisfac tory, according to the Thoraasville Times. It says: “Parties traveling over the lines of the S. F. & W. have noticed that the road bed, both on the side and between the rails, has been allowed to grow up In grass and weeds. Heretofore the roa J- bed has been kept perfectly clean and free from all growth, but experiments recently made have shown that this was money spent for nothing, as the grass and weeds kept the bed from washing and the road in line, reducing the amount of labor very considerably and kept the road in a much better and safer condition. Railroad men say that it is a big improvement over the old plan, not OPENING And G-rand Display of Fine Dress Goods, Uotions, Etc. ■AT- eports you i on i y ln t | le way 0 f ))re8erv |ng the f were only originated for tlie roa dbed and reducing expenses, but in of diverting the shipments from I the comfort ()f passenger nr by some envious competitor." The report is ev- v enviously malicious, and if you . iu toto you will ouly set forth the true state of affairs." C.»] t, II. C. Bagley, of the Bank of Ani" leus, when informed of the current rumor ouly laughed as he said: “Why, the thing Is absurd on its face. In *hw first place, instead of there being a - .Mrcity of funds, the Bank of Ann ricus expressed only this afternoon -a package of currency to Savannah, and in the second place our arrangements with that point are of such a character tha» vill enable us to be amply supplied with funds between the hours of closing to-d ly and openiug to-morrow, even if such contingency should arise. The rum 'r, I am sure, has not the slight est truthful foundation and should be emphatically denied in justice to Aiucri- cun buyers." From the abovo it seems that even those who run may read, and readily see that surrounding markets, envious of the advantages offered by Americus to j __ producers, have endeavored to circulate 1 JtlOSlQPy, among the fanners these false reports.
