Sarah Walter., living about three mile, west of Amerlcu., was awakened about 12 o’clock Friday night by the falling of a heavy body. At once divin ing the true state of affair., Ur.. Wal ter. arose and called Mr. T. W. Fuller, who occupies a room in the rear of the bouse. When Mr. Fuller arrived he found that the burglars had made their escape by jumping through the opon window of the dining room. After an examination l|)rs. Walters discovered that the thieves had arranged to carry off two trunks, but in their haste were only able to secure one of the trunks and a small satchel. The stolen trunk be longed to Miss Walters, and contained clothing to the value of $75 to $100, while in the satchel was a small amount of money. A search revealed the fact that the trunk was opened, rilled of Its contents, and then probably hidden in the woods, as many small articles identified by Miss Walters as having been In it were found on the road to Americas. To make sure when all was safe to conSroenco operations the burglars pull ed a heavy yard bench under Mr. Ful ler’s window, thus commanding a view of the Interior of bis room and enabling them to ascertain when he was safely asleep. There was quite a collation left upon the dining room table from the previous meal, and this the thieves devoured completely. Tracks in the yard and around the houso load to the supposition that the theft was committed by a man and woman. As yet no capture has been effected. Attended the Un tiring Effort, of Mr. Thomas Guico. Eight years ago Tom Guice, the pro prietor of the Opera House Saloon, under the opera house, Forsyth street, came to Americus a penniless boy, but by strict attention to business, coupled with perseverance and economy, has at tained an enviable reputation as a busi ness man. Three years ago be opened business at his present stand, with Mr. Ed Speer as a partner, with only three hundred dollars. Everything seemed to prosper, and within twelve months be bought out Mr. Speer, paying $2,000 cash, and for the past two yoars he has been going it alone. He now has one of the handsomest bars in southwest Georgia, the fixtures costing between $1,200 and $1,500. He cariies a stock valued at $5,000, consisting of wines, whiskies, cigars and tobacco; also an immense line of loaded and unloaded shells, loading Implements aud material, powder and shot, for all of which he pays the cash. He is agent for the famous “Eagle” brand whisky, for which ho has built up a very great domand in .this section. And, in fact, he has the reputation of keeping the best of everything in bis line, and talking about cold beer, bo keeps it on hand fresh and fine all the time, and sells more of it than any other house iu Americus. His opora house sol >on is run by himself, assisted by Mr. Joo Jolly, who has a “smile” to suit everybody. He is also book-keeper for this bouse aud Mr. Guice’s Cotton avenue saloon. In speaking of the Cotton Avenue sa loon, it may bo remomberod by way of parenthesis, that this is one of the neat est and prettiest bars in Americus, with Walter Harris as manager, and Eugene Harris clerk, in which is carried a sev eral thousand dollar stock. Mr. Harris has the reputation of being one of the best mixers of fancy drinks In the State, and bis brother Eugeno, Is not far be hind him. Mr. Guico, though quite a young man, is far onough ahead to own bank and other stocks, and has a good balanco in tho bank, besides having purchased a nice ten room two-story residence for his mother. Mr. Guice owns one of the fastest un trained horses in the state that ho would not part with for a good pile of money.
