THE AM ERIC LS WEEKLY TIMEfe-KECORDEll: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, i»»l. TRAIN UOBBERS. | MASKED MEN FORCE TRAINMEN TO OPEH THE CAR. With Gun* the Bobber* Board theC’a Commence Their tt'ork-Glass »«« Smashed With Bullets anil the Car f orated With Bullet-Hole*. Died. \ NT A, Nov. li.—Mrs. Men el P. ay of Albany, died yesterday e of pneumonia at her boarding | house, (11 Noith Forsyth street She j came to Atlanta to attend the exposition, nd and was on the verge of leaving for home re I when she was stricken with the fatal r- malady which so quickly ended her life. I Her remains were taken to Albany to- j day for interment, accompanied by her I sorrowing husband, Mr. and Mrs. Merrel Kansas City, Nov. «. Hie Missouri j (’ a i)a\ V ay of Americus, and Mr. James Pacific passenger train which was held J Callaway of /Jacon. and rohlvd at Wes: Side, near Omaha, arrived hero at ft o'clock in the morning, three hours late. The train looked as if it had gone through the war. The front door of the express car broken into splinters. The front door of the smoking car had the glass smashed our by bullets, and the other cars were more or less perforated with bullet holes. Tlie Pacific express car was the only one that was robbed. Immediately af ter the train arrived here the express matter that the robl>en» did not take u*as sent to the company's office. Sam Green, the messenger, went to the su perintendent's office and was closeted j with the superintendent for aomo time, j Before he saw his superior he j would say nothing about the j robbery. Afterwards he said the | robbers only got about $289.83. Super- I intendent Jonhnson also say* the rob bers got but $.'85,843. It seems to be j the general belief, however, that $Q,(K'0 wiH more nearly cover the company’s lose. The best story of the robbery is told by Fireman Blanchard, and is sub stantiated as follows: ” We had got pretty near to the Fre mont, Flkhorn and Missouri Valley crossing, twelve miles this side of Omaha, when I saw two masked fel lows with guns in their hands come crawling over to the water tank and xioal in the tender. "Hold up your hands ! n they yelled, ■with an oatll, and my hands went up that quick. But Cavanaugh did not hold up his hands at all. He just kept them on the lever and stop-cock and looked around over Ins shoulder. "Slow her up.” they said, and Cavanaugh sloped her up. "Stop her at the cross ing,” was the next thing we heard from under the masks, and we did just as they said, for we were looking down the barrels of guns that looked like can nons to us. "Now' get off," they or dered. We got off. ’lhen there was an explosion on the front end of the ex press car. Then two more fellows oame up. They all began to shoot around promiscuous like, and did not seem to care where their bullets went or who they hit. They shot into the express car and into the smoker and all around generally. There must have been a hundred shots fired. " They gave me an ax and told me to break in the wrecked door of the ex press car. I did not work very good and they got mad and commenced firing into the platform where I stood. One bullet cut Cavanaugh’s overalls and grazed his leg. Then they saw tiie door was broiceu loose, and they told me to tell the express messenger to light up inside and come out. 1 called to Sam and told him what they wanted. "Well, Sam was lying over in the cor ner of the car, hid down among some stuff behind a coffin. The explosion had blown out hia lights. Out he lit a lamp and came to the door. Then the men marchod us up into the car and again mude us hold up our hands. Then they made Sam shell out his keys. " ‘Where’s your safe/ they asked. "’You’re stauding on it,* says Sum. Then then they went through every thing. " After they had completed the rob bery of the cur one of the masked men, who seemed to be the leader, turned to the engineer and fireman and said, 4 Come ahead.’ "The robliera got off the train. ‘ I gue i s it is all right now,’ one said: ‘get back on the engine and go ahead. ’ The engineer and firemen complied, and the robbers disappeared." Several or the bullets fired by the robbers entered the sleepers and day coaches at the rear of the train, and severul passengers narrowly escaped being hit. Famuli* Lock-Bicker DpiiiI.
