1 At 3.-15 this afternoon the jury returned
1 a verdict of ‘‘not guilty" in the Howartl-
Bickerataff case. Just after court ad-
! j'oirned there was an affecting scene.
: Friends crowded around, and the two
Howards and Bickerstalf fell on each
others neck and wept.
The trial began Monday, and the most
intense interest prevailed on account of
the standing of all the parties,
RICH LAND’S MAYOR
Married to Mlaa Maggie Carter on Wedne.-
neiday at Noon.
KiculAND, Ga , Nov. 18.—No happier
event has ever occurred in Iticbland so
ciety than that at the Baptist church to
day, when our popular young Mayor,
Prof. J. C. Layfield and Miss Maggie
Carter were united in holy wedlock.
Just at 12si0 p. m., the appointed
hour, the wedding march began, which
was beautifnBy rendered by Miss Jessie
Forrester, and slowly up the right atste
of the church proceeded Mr. F- D. Black
and Dr. R. E. L. llarnum, and up the
left, Messrs. G. R. Rrown and R. J.
Dixon, who acted as ushers, these cross
ing and taking their stand upon opposite
sides under arches of evergreen inter
woven with rare and lovely (lowers-
Next up the centre aisle came two
sweet and pretty little dower girls,
Misses ChAp Savllle and Louise Lamai,
who bore each a lovely bouquet of choice
chrysanthemums, and opened the gate
for the happy couple who immediately
followed them, and then advancing to
their positions on either side of the cen
tral arch. As the bride and groom passed
through the little gate-way through
which they were never to return as
lovers, but as husband and wife, they
presented a lovely picture.
These proceeding to their position be
neath the central arch and all facing the
large audience assembled, the Rev. M.
B. L. Binion arose and proceeded to per
form a most solemn, impressive and
beautiful ceremony, which made them
man and wife. After tho ceremony they
were drlvon to the Richland Inn, where
they received tho congratulations of rela
tives and friends.
At 133 p. m., under showers of rice
and with tho good wishes of all, they
boarded the north-bound train on tho
Columbus Southern railroad and were
off to spend several weeks visiting rela
tives in this state and Alabama. May
joy and happiness attend them.
