THE AMERICAS WEEKLY TIMEfe-RECORUER: FRIDAY, DECEMBER I I, 1891. IN TWENTY YEARS. COTTON IS LOWER THAN IT HAS BEEN For Twenty Year*—It is Terribly Short in This Section —Outlook for a if iso in Price s is not Encouragiujc-The Colton Factors are not Very Elated. One of the boys replied that he would Cotton dropped another notch ycstor- like to have a job, and the negro, who pay and it seems that it wiH never rise gave his name as Alex McDonald, told TWO A SI EICIC'I’S BOYS Are Caught by a Curious Trick in Colum bus, (ia. Tuesday night, while two young boys from Ainericus were standing In the union depot, they were approached by a negro wearing the uniform of a brake- man and asked If they wanted work again. That the outlook is rather discoui- aging is not to be denied, and yet farm ers and merchants have in their very souls a grim determination to retrench, to economize to the last notch and to win the desperate fight at all hazards. The local market went off a fraction yestorday and everything was as quiet as the tomb. It was exceedingly quiet. A Timks-Rk< or i»kk reporter inter viewed a prominent cotton merchant yesterday morning concerning the re ceipts of Americus this season and the prospects for a rise in prices—a reaction from the present stagnation in cotton circles. “Why arc the receipts so very small? was asked. “They arc not very small when you take into consideration the amount of cotton raised in the vicinity. Our cotton receipts last year were about 0.1,000 bales, the crop this year is 30 per cent, short. Thirty per cent, now of 0:1,000 is 18,000 bales. Now take 18,000 bales from <13,000 and It leaves 45,000 bales as the maximum of our receipts for this year.” “But, will Americus receive this45,000 bales this year?’’ “That question is easily answered by referring you to the present receipts and let you draw your own corclusions. I can say that from present indications that I believe that before the season is at an end that the culminating figure will bo In excess of 45,000. Our ware house facilities are excellent, and taking everything into consideration the people oi Americus have abundant reasons to feel pride in her record as a cotton market.” “What about prices 0 ” “They are lower uow than anytime within my memory for twenty years. I am certain, however, that It will be next thing to an impossibility for them to sink any lower than they are now.” “Is there much ungathered cotton?*’ “No, the crop is to all practical ends gathered, and not enough remains in the holds to aifect in a material measure the present computations of the amount of cotton produced. The staple of cotton is much superior this year than it lias been for years.” It .Should l>e in Every llmn»e* .1. 11.
