The wails are being reared rapidly! Very lew of our citizens realize the magnitude of the jail enterprise now rapidly materializing. Sometime since the grand jury called attention to, and many of our citizens who are familiar with the situation agree with them that the present building was too small, with had sanitary conditions, and moreover it is not what you could, in tlie strictest acceptation of the term, call an absolntelysecure place of confine ment. The county of Sumter, with its large population, its really great wealth and its progress in every laudable direction, could not afford to have a jail that breeds disease and death, that was out-grown years ago It is generally admitted that the sheriff, the bailiff and jailer are all of them humane and faithful officials are, doing the best they cau do tinder such unfavorable conditions, but they can't be supposed to work miracles. This will show the public that the building of a jail that was adapted to our multiplying necessities was very commendable and the energy could not have been devoted to a more worthy project. Sumter county can point with just pride before many more months to the most imposing and decidedly the hand somest jail in the state. Its foundations will offer some idea of the complete edifice. It will rise two stories in the air; will bo constructed out of compact masonry; will be well vcutilated; well lighted,; comfortably arranged in its internal ar rangement and the whole will be satis factory and handsome. The jailer's house will form an L pro jection, running south. The jailer's house will be neatly furnished and will present <|uito an attractive appearance. Sumter county will find an unfailing source of pride in her new jail and chal lenges the state to show one that will compare to it in its outward appear ance or inward arrangement. OHIO KXCIKSION. Hawkes, of Austin, a pair of his C’rystalizcd Lons spectacles, and I must say I wus surprised to find them so transparent and fine. I consider these spectacles the best in existence, and can highly recommend them to all those who are obliged to use glasses.
