In the presence of a dozen comrade.,
Gene Eldrldge, a young negro boy, wax
drowned at Ilarlow'. mill ye.ter.lay
morning.
Karly yesterday morning a large crowd
of negroes, ranging In age from twenty
years down, went out to the pond to go
In swimming. This place is their favor
ite resort, and every day (cores of them
congregate there.
In tome places the pond Is shallow,
but In others the depth Is ten (eet or
more.
It seems that the crowd of which
young Eldrldge was a member was com
posed mostly of boys of 10 or Is years
and none of them could swim. N ine
larger boys who could swim wee not t.,r
off.
The little fellows were paddlinu :>’>mit
in shallow water. Eldridge sei.utd a
heavy scantling, and lying half upon It
and half in the water, began paddling
about. The piece of wood floated out
toward the deep water, and the boy
paid little atten'ion to where he waa
going.
Those with him thought he was get
ting along all right, until {suddenly they
■aw the plank turn and with a splash
and a gurgling cry young Eldrldge went
under.
He came to the surface again, and
his efforts to shout for help were pite
ous. He could barely he heard a. lie
cried:
••Hob, come save me! come sa
There was a stilled scream, aad down
he sank to the bottom.
His comrades, excited and frightened
did nothing whatever to save him
When the larger boys reached the scene
it was too late to do any good. They
immediately began diving for the body,
hut It was a half hour before he was
found and taken from the water.
lly that time a large crowd had gatli
ered on the bank, and many were assist
ing in the search. The body was carried
to the boy's home on Ashby street, where
the loud grief of his mother excited
much sympathy from] the little knot of
hearers. She moaned and cried as If
her heart would break.
The dead ’ boy could not have been
over twelve years old. He was quite
well know n to the colored people, and
many whites knew nud liked the boy
tuul his pnronts.

All Allhtuce .Meeting*
Thctc was some sort o( au Alliance
meeting at the Court House yesterday.
And it's said the meeting wan held to
talk about and name legislative candi
dates.
To this it is added that while there
was much talking, no candidates or can-
didate were or was selected to he the
standard-hearer of the Alliance.
Sumter's Alliance it what its name
implies and it isn't a political body. The
members are Democrats and when a man
Is named for the legislature they think
their brother Democrats should have
just as much showing at they.
And, as It's talked, that'* the way the
meeting went yesterday.
None of the alllanccmen would nay
anything much about what was the ob
ject of the meeting or wbat went on.
Mr. D. C. X. Hurkbalter Is presides
of the county alliance, and Tux Ttwr.s-
RkcoKtikit asked him about the meet
ing.
“I don't know anything about It,”
said be,
“Did you call any trcetlng?”
“No.”
He said be didn't know wbat was the
object of the meeting or wbat waa done,
and that no official meeting was called
of the county or district alliance. He
wasn't present at the meeting.
“What about the third party meet
ing?” he was asked.
“I don’t know anything about that,"
said be. “I am not a third party man.”

allow the work to he dono.
