never says
Sumtar polities have been simmering
for some time, bnt even yet the boiling
point baa not been reached.
In fact there is not an announced leg
islative or senatorial candidate in tbe
county.
Nobody is running, but there is
disputing tbe fact that many bare their
eyes on one or the other of tbo place*.
Before a nominating convention
held it Is probable that a big meeting
wiii take place, and all the candidates
and prospective candidates will be given
an op|>ortunity to address the people
and tell them what their positions and
and opinions are.
•So much attention has been paid to
national politics that local matters bare
been left a little in tbe eo’d—except by
prospective candidates.
The Times Recokoeu doesn't pretend
to say who the prospective candidates
are, but it heats the wishes of some of
tlie people.
For our state senator,” said a very
prominent aud inltueutial gentleman
yesterday, “I am for Col. A. S. Cutts
above any one. He's an old war horse
whom 1 delight to honor in any way
and if he will accept tbe place I will vote
for him above anybody else.
“Next to him I am for Hon. W. M
Hatvket, Sumter's eloquent, able and
popular son.”
About representatives to the lower
there is so much talk that alt who arc
praised can not be mentioned.
Mt. D C. N. Burkhaiter is talked
about a great deal, and be has the earn
est siip|H>rt of some of our best men.
Mr. Tom Davenport is mentioned, too,
I n prospective candidate.
Lots of others are talked about, but
ss mentioned above, none have an
nounced. Said a gentleman yesterday:
•‘( apt. J. L. Adderton is a veteran
legislator with a capital record. I would
like lo see him nominated and elected,
8aid anothei :
”J. E. Bass, of the 13th district, is a
turdy fanner. He has never sought
.mbllc office, is honest and capable and
s a steillng democrat of the old school.
He knew* the needs of the farmer*, is
In thorough sympathy with them and
will well represent them. Hia district
has not bad a legislator since the war
and If he should enter the race will
pruvo a strong candidate.”
