following presentments.

who is now at work, aud will have ready
for the next grand jury a thorough

this recommendation by verbal report of
the present accountant or auditor, who
says that itlio discrepancies between
the books of the tax collector and tax
receiver are entirely Irreconcilable, and
are likely to show great loss to the
county. The appointment of auditor
we think.should be made by the judge

In consideration of the scarcity of
money, and of the burden of an addi
tional levy of tax for road purposes, we
recommend that the county cotemis-
sloner* continue In force as much of the
old eyetem of read working as may be
practicable with the addition of such
port at pa its of tbe new law as may be
foand economical and advantageous.
We urge upon the county commis
sioner* renewed vigilance, and ask their
attention especially to tbe neglect of
the railroads to put and keep their
crossings In proper condition, aud to
bring their road* to the proper grade,
alto to the encroachments on roads by
cultivated crops, and also urge upon all
officers Interested tbe enforcement of
tbe law, believing that if that is fully
carried out the improvements of the
roads will soon follow.

We find upon examination that the
oourt house is In fair condition; that the
new jail It a model of architecture and
workmanship, and we congratulate our
worthy boanl of commissioner* and as
represents Uvea of tbe people we tender
them thanks. We recommend that the
commissioners on roads and revenues
advertise for thirty days, and sell at pub
lic ontcry, not later than November 15th
of the present year, the bouse and
grounds of the old Jail and place the pro
ceeds la tbe hands of the treasurer.
Whereas, Complaints from various
parts of the county, touching the action

Inspection snd comparison, we find that
the complaints of, and obJecUoos to, tbe
change are reasonable and worthy ol
our deepest solicitude. We find that
while tbe American Book Company's
works are not as free from sectional

of (linn A Co,, with whom the last con

The long continued session of the

and business of tbe county. Second,
there is a very large amount of iintln

the dockets of tiie courts for a number
of year* past, and bis Honor, Judgo

earnest effort to clean tho dockets of the

An act of the legislature make* it the
duty of this grand Jury to investigate
the pension list payable in this couuty,
and while wo have labored dllllgontly
and sought all possible methods and
means to got at tho bottom of tho mat
ter, wo find a lack of that convincing
evidence which in some case* hardly
create* a doubt, but renders tbe report
not entirely satisfactory. We have to
recommend the following list as worthy
pensionera:
No. 597, N. W. llass, loss of arm, 8100:
288, Rice Bass, toss of leg, 8100; 2,080,
D. K. Brinson, body wound, 850;
1,952, 11. R. Dean, disabled arm, 850;
1101, J. W. Harris, disabled arm and

linson ; 17.-7, Mrs. M. A. Wilson; 2821,
Mrs. M. M. Wise; 2*il, Mrs. Matilda J.
Chambliss.
We find, according to our understand
ing of tiie law, some parties have drawn
pensions that are not entitled thereto.
Among the number is Mrs. Mary A.
Autry, the wife of David Autry. Our
information is that David Autry was a
member of the filth Georgia Regiment,
and that be deserted the Confederate
cause in tiie year 18fi4. therefore not a
legal pensioner. That Sirs. Jane
Clements, the w ife of Samuel Clements,
was mandril in the year 1804 to*' James
Marcus, and Is therefore excluded from
jicnsion. R L. Kinzie having failed or
refused to nppear before this body, or
to produce evidence as to bis right to a
pension, after due notice by advertise
ment In TiikTimes liKioitHEii, as well
ns by tetter directed to bis last known
post-office, we are compelled for lack of
proof to place bis name on the doubtful
list. Tensioner Mary A. Giissin having
failed to produce before this body, satis
factory evidence of the death of her hus
band Is also considered doubtful.

The alliance warehouse is a favorite
resort for many of tiie peo|de, and
politic* enjoy a big share of tiie attention
of the talkers. Yesterday *111110 a crowd
of democrats anil third partyites began
a discussion which all enjoyed. Tito hit*
and sallies were numerous, and the
democrats endeavored to show tiie others
where they were wrung.
Mr, D. C. N. Rurklialter, who is as
firm a democrat a* he is an alliancoinnn,
happened along and stmt some Hi at rate,
forcible doctrine Into tho ears of tho
listeners. Ho Is a strong talker and
whenever he beglus he catches the atten
tlon of tiie crowd. Hi* arguments were
unanswerable.
He was a preacher, and after moral
izing on the corruption of congress, he
mentioned the Geoigia legislature.
I'll illustrate what I think of tbe
legislature by a little anecdote,” said be.
“There was once a young man who fell
very much In lore with a young woman
and began conning her. She recipro
cated the alfcetion and the two became
engaged. Thing* ran on smoothly for a
time, hut one day he went to her with a
very troubled express'on.
“He told her that there was something
about his family that he should have
told her before, but he hadn't the cour
age, fearing he would lose her. How
ever, he htul made up Id* mind to be
honest with her, and wanted to say that
he had a brother In tho penitentiary.
“He cast hla eye* down us ho said this,
and a look of siiaino nnd despondency
crept over his face, lint tho maid, she
merely laughed.
" ‘Oh! that's nothing, dear,' said she.
‘I have a brother in the legislature.” '
That’s one of Uncle Jim Bass’ cam
paign stories that he sprung tho other
day. You know lie's a candidate for the
place the lady's brother occupied.
Apropos of candidates, ha-1 you
noticed that there are only two an

And then, of course, you have noticed
that there are just about four times that
many who are working for the place.
Somebody said the other day that the
reason of this was because they thought
they would gain a voto or two by mak
