F.srrjr County Kirrpt Two-The Official
Count Today.
Moxtgomkky, Ala., Aug. 5.—Return!
of Homo sort are now in from every
county except Coffee and Elmore. Tlio
official count alouc, it appear*, can de
termine the result in those twocountlcs.
The Advertiser** tablo this morning
gives figures from every county except
those and llutler and Henry.
In llutler tho Jones men still claim
that the official estiva** will show Kolb
defeated.
From Abbeville comes tho report that
Kolb hit* carried tho county by 1,2.70
majority.
Hut from Columbia also conics the
statement that the returns from a large
beat that went for Kolb were vitiated
by tlie failure to deliver at tho court
house within forty-eight hours, the time
prescribed by law. If such is tlie case,
it is said tho county will turn up in the
Jones column on tho official canv ss.
Therefore this county is left out in the
estimates.
Hut after giving Kolb 2,401 in Talla
poosa, 1,023 in Limestone, etc , Gov
ernor Jones still has Iff, 48$ majoiity.
There aro strong reasons to believe that
tho official canvass tomorrow will in-
crease tin* tiguro to over 20,000,
Somo of Kolb’s figures are pretty cer
tain to ho brought down, anil some of
Junes' are Unhid to be increased.
Tho most *ignilieant development yes
terday was Tho Alliance Herald's failure
to tiguro out a majority on tho faco of
the returns for Kolb. It has been ru
mored that it would give Kolb about ten
housand majority, and it was to be ex
pected that it would follow Kolb's ex
ample of claiming everything.
Hut on tho contrary, it concedes Jones
a majority of 4,500, and virtually give up
that there is no hope of Kolb's success.

Sax Fii.V2*ci*co, August 0.—Professor
Holden, of Lick < Miscrvatory, hit* not re
sponded to tho re<picst for the result of
Wednesday night's observations of Mars
It has, however, been learned that the
night was clear and that tho observations
were succcftsfnl.
No unusual ap(»earat)ccs were noticed
on tho dink of tho planet. The astron
tners measured with a micrometer the
distances of tho two satellites from the
planet, and spent the night at tlie task.
Owing to tlie wide interest over tho
possible results of tho observations,
rofessor Holden sent this dispatch
here:
There is absolutely nothing to be
said about our Mars observations from
night to night, nr shout our observation 1
of tho whole year even, until after the
work has been gone over with care and
map made of our results, which will
take until October next at least.
All, or nearly all, tho present excite
ment over Mars Is exaggerated, and
utterly useless to the people in general
as it is harmful to true science. Kxag
gerated and Ignorant expectations* such
as relate to communication with the in
habitants of .1 planet which we are not
lately certain is habitable will not
be realized/'
