Let the fifteen hundred club of .Sum

thousand club is threatening to give a
bigger m»jority*for Crisp, Northen and
Cleveland than Sumter.

other things she buys abroad.

SkaH Wiuoiir Is quoted as saying
that If the Third party had nominated
some decent man like Judge Gresham,
!ic might have gone with them, but that
ho couldn’t stand any such unreliable
and shabby man as Weaver. Thousands
of others felt the same way. aad Weaver’s
name has cost the party thousands of
votes in the South.
M.woit Ui.a« k and Mr. Watson have
arranged to have a joint debate in each
of the eleven counties of Mr. Watson’s
district—the Tenth. The lirst meeting
will take place early in September. The
debate will attract a good deal of atten
tion. The impression is that Mr. Watson
will he defeated In the debate and in the
election.
Till? New Haven Palladium, a leading
Republican Journal, says: “If Mr. liar*
lisoti is re-elected, as wc believe and
trust he will he, there Is no doubt that
the most earnest efforts of his adminis
tration will he extended toward the
passage of a federal election law by Con
gress similar to that which passed the
House of Representatives of the last
Congress."
Suva: of the most effective work for
Democracy that has ever been seen has
been done by Judge Crisp in Schley and
Dooly the past week. His strong, solid,
practical speeches have won scores of
votes; and even those Third party men iu
' resort to save himself from utter rout
ara evidence of the desperation of Ids
situation.
He refused to meet Major (Rack in
joint debate in Richmond; and of his
speech Tuesday night iu Augusta, the
Evening News says that nearly every
Democrat who attended the speaking
last night, and who had never heard Mr.
Watson, was disappointed In him as a
public orator.
His reputation exceeds Ids true meas
ure of ability. That ho is active and
alert and skillful as a tactician is ad
mitted, but he is wanting in strength
and volume of thought and utterance.
He will do less harm to Democracy
the moie the people see and hear him,
not that he is a weak man, but because
he is not so strong as Ids reputation.
One of his dodges was exposed last
night, though many persons who were
present did n »t |»crliap» fully under
stand it.
He was Hying to explain his course iu
opposing the stating of the colored
mciuhti of the legislature from Camden
unty, Anthony Wilson, in l**'-\ The
public will recall the fact that the evi
dence in favor of Wilson’s election was
whelming that the Demociatic
Committee of the Democratic Legisla

against his white competitor. Watson
ms to have hated Anthony to such an
ent that he fought* that report on
the floor of the House, and tried to
keep him out of what he was justly en
titled to.
Well, last night iu Ids speech, he ho
gan on this point by rending from the
journal of the House the re|mit of the
election committee, signed l»y Henry G.
Turner as chairman, and declaring
against Wilson. If h« (Watson) was to
