I'HK AMEKlUUo WEEKLY TIMES--RK0ORDER: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31. 1897.
the shall farmer.
The "leal home in the South in the
loug-ai-'o was a l“ r S<> air? ami subatau-
t j,,| mnuaion in the miiiat of a lawn of
several acres anil surrounded by hun
dreds of acres of cultivated fields and
u-any acres of outlaying domain,
s-aelt homes were the centers of culture
nud hospitality. But things have
changed, baronial estates have vanish
ed or are handled as money-making in
struments by corporations with head-
quarters in the commercial centers.
They are not homes in any sense of the
word. The ideal home in the Soijtli at
the present time is a farm of moderate
dimensions, intelligently cultivated
with the sole view of making it a home,
characterized rather by contentment |
than the acquisition of wealth; by per
sonal independence, rather than noto
riety; by the sedate pleasures of a ra
tional home life, rather than the mis
leading allurements of political ambi
tions. Industry and frugality, intelli
gently directed, are sure of their re
ward in such a home A good farm,
even if it be a smnll one. where the
slowly accumulating profits go to per
fecting the original design of making
a home, where one will be glad to spend
his days under his own vine and fig
tree, and to reanchildren who shall in
like manner honor their patrimony, iH
the fittest field for human effort, be
cause it a&ords with the divine plan
and is pleasing to both Ood nud man.
It ought to be the ambition of every
man who subsists directly from the
products of the soil to possess such a
home, but there are thousands who,
through imperfect judgment or misdi
rected labor, like certain erratic birds,
ucver nest twice in the same tree—at
home anywhere, but never at home.
They are agricultural nomads who nev
er realize the sweet contentment of
home, never feel the ennobling in
stincts of responsible citizenship, with
out locul ties or a family burying
ground. Such families and such lives
are to be commiserated. They are
“crop failures” in the moral vineyard.
But these are in no worse condition
than their city prototypes, the freo
lunch and hash house habitues, who
also livo from hand to mouth, bnt they
are free fcom the temptations that
spread their spider nets on every cor
ner, where so many are entangled and
fall. The farmer who possesses a homo
and a hundred acres of good land is in
a position of absolute independence;
no probable contingency can bring him
to want. His capital is his industry
and intelligence; Jiis bank his fertile
acres, where his drafts are always hon
ored. Commercial panics he reads c f,
bnt otherwise knows little about them,
for they are rarely epidemic outside of
the cities. If need be, such a farmer
can remnin at home IKlo consecutive
days without material detriment to his
interests. We have many such homes
in Texas. We need forthwith 100,000
more.—Texas Farm and Ranch.
SANTA CLAUS FILLS PRINCES’
AND PRINCESSES’ STOCKINGS
CHRISTMAS EVE.
Sweet Christmas Eve! Around that
sacred name the joys of childhood
twine, and retrospection loves to trace
the footworn way which leads us back
to all our household gods—though
many may have long since fallen into
dust. The friends whioh shared the
joys of those delicious days and min-
■led with us round the glowing hearth
“ere slumber’s chain had bound us,’
may now be sleeping where no rude
blasts ever come. But as wo look into
the’wondering eyes and kiss the cher-
r y childish cheeks that look into our
faces now, the dear companions of our
youth come back from the spirit land
and in our day dream
To such of her children as are with
her Queen Victoria giv. s her gift per
sonally, and with her little grand
children the old fuble of Santa Claus
is upheld, and the royal stocking is
very much heavier nnd more valuable
from the beloved grandmamma’s gift.
To those children who are away the
gift is sent with a letter, generally by
messenger, sometimes by-post, but to
those who live abroad a queen’s mes
senger takes the gift and the queen’s
letter which accompanies it. To the
members of tho household the gift is
either sent or given with a gracious
messago or some words of kind, affec
tionate greeting To any crowned
head who may be the recipient of a
royal Christmas gift the queen would
certainly write an autograph letter,
bnt to those of her immediate entour
age a message or a letter written at
her desire would accompany her gift.
To her German relations the queen’s
letter would be in English, to any
other royal personage it wonlil be in
French, but to all her children she
writes in English.
Hitherto I have spoken only of what
the queen does in the way of bestow
ing Christmas gifts on her children
and friends, and it. may not bo unin
teresting to mention a few facts as to
what Christmas offerings are made to
her. All her children present a Christ
mas gift, and to the queen their pres
ents are not very costly, for it would,
be useless to endeavor to give her any
thing very splendid when we remem
ber how she is possessed of everything
that is valuable and beautiful by right
of being queen of England. The grand
children also make an offering to the
grandmother who is always tender,
loving and indulgent to them, and
their presents are again of a simple
nature, and none of them arc possessed
of a great fortune. Some little knick-
knack for the tablo, a bit of silver, a
beautifully bound book, a photograph
frame, any such small gifts are what
members of the household, eithor sev
erally or in combination, make their
Christmas offering. In tho early years
of the qncen’s married life tho German
custom was followed, but circum
stances have led moro or less to its
abandonment, and the present is given
personally to the queen. The queen
receives many simple and homely gifts
from some very humble but dovotod
friends, nnd I am told that nothing
touches her moro than their remem-
branco of her on such occasions.—La
dies’ Home Tournal.
