Iniuuls ol the time*, hut as a tule the
great body of farmers are puna
tug the same beateu truck wluoti
their fathers have always followed, re
gardless of the fact tlmt, finm our ex-l
haustive system of agriculture, the very'
structure of our soim even has under
gone a radio il oliuugr, adit that tin
soils now require different treatmt
from that which they have received tu
the past. These are time* of suoli fluc
tuating prices and close margins thut it
pays the farmer to do his owu piauulug
in these matters, and to use his brains
and Judgmeut as to what, whsre and
1iow much he shall plant of different
crops, in order to get the bekl returns
for his iuvestmeut of time, labor, im
plement*, stock aud laud. The experi
ence of the past few year* will do much
to thyow light ou these questions. It
has been proven by repeated efforts that
farmers are not easily organised, they
do uot fully appreciate the importance
of oulted effort for self protection. An
other difficulty In the way of controlling
the area in cottou is the fact that for
generations we have been studying the
babitt aud peculiarities of this, oor
money crop, and it is tha one crop which
we know now to grow. It has always
been onr mousy crop, and we hesitate
to engage iu experimental work ou
other lines.
It seems to ns, however, that the so-
lntiqu of this mooli discussed problem
is a very simple oue, and the plan, if
universally followed, will once and for
ali ael at rest the question of how mnoh
cotton the south can afford to raise. The
answer is, as mnrh as she can produce,
after she liaa provided for fall burns and
smokehonses; for pleuty of home sop'
plies fiom held, orchard, garden, poul
try yard and dairy—and lias thus learned
'the oft repeated lesson of liviugut horn*
and working on a cash basis, to "pay as
yon go, ttiui go a* yon pay."
We most udapt ourselves to the
changed cumlitioua, which we meet' on
•very baud, aud this cannot be done by
any very snddeii or veiy radical re
forms. Over e very large area cottou
must reroam the chief money crop. To
abaudou its culture nud (rust to some
other purhups unfamiliar ornp would bn
the height of folly, bnt we matt not
load our agricultural ship to the gun
wales with cotlou bales uuu then expoot
to escape disaster when nufuvorubie
conditions arise.
THE CSX or FEUTlMZhSS.
We have always maintained flint the
wonderful power of commercial fertil
izers is but faiutiy comprehended by
those whose tuisfortnue it has been to
misapply them. A tbongbtful man
cannot expect to improve bia laud with
commercial lertilixera alone. The com
mon practice of drilling .in 100 or 300
pounds to tbo acre on land destitute of
bnmua it a grave miatake, and lias
proven e corse rsther tbau a blessing.
But, when we fill Che laud with humus,
by turning under vegetable matter, by
careful rotation of crops, by making aud
taking proper care of ail the home ma
nure* possible and by the use of legu
minous crop*, we will find that the
profitable use of commercial fertilisers
will be limiied ooly by the amooiit of
money we are able to invest in them.
The iutcl igeut use of the fertilizers en
ables oue to plow deep; to plant reno
vating crops; to raire and improve
stock and keep more of it; to make 103 ‘
per cent more of borne manures, end to
donbie the producing capacity of labor,
now onr most expensive item. Iujndi-
meat and caterers methods tre worse
Ihna useless Unless intelligent fore
thought marks our plant, the fertilizer
fails to feed either the crop or the land.
NothtV.g la morodangerocs to the crops,
tr more depleting to the farmer's
pocket than heavy amounts of oommer-
ctsl fertilizer indiscriminately applied
to worn aud'ezbansted sotiq

The importance of

cannot be overestimated. The quality
