The burglar bold who entered Har

of the thief have not as yet made an
arrest, The burglar wrenched an iron
bar from a rear window with the ease

thon proceeded to help himself. The
^bash drawer was prized open and eight
dollars taken therefrom, while from
the shelf the burglar filled his pocket*
with cigars. If other goods were taken
the fact conld not be discovered. The
"raid” was made early in the night and
was certainly a bold one.
About one person in every four suf

The most common and annoying ia
itching piles, indicated by warmtb,
slight moisture and intense, uncon
trollable itching in the parts afieoted.
The usual treatment has beeu some
simple ointment or salve which some
times gives temporary relief, but noth
ing like a permanent cure can be ex

The only permanent core for itching

bleeding or protrading. The first ap
plication gives instant relief and the
contiuned use for a short time causes a
permanent removal of the tumors or
the small parasites which cause the
intense itching aud discomfort of itch
ingpilea.
Many physicians for n long time sup
liosed that the remarkable relief afford
ed by the Pyramid Pile Cure was
because it was snpjiosed to contain
cocaine, opium or similar drugs, bnt
each is not the case. A recent carefnl
analysis of the remedy showed it to be
absolutely freo from any cocaine,
opium, or in fact any poisonons, inju
rious drugs whatever.
For this reason the Pyramid File
Cure is probably the only pile cure ex
tensively recommended by physicians,
because it is so safe, so prompt in the
relief affordod and so far as known the
only positivo euro for piles except a
surgical operation.
In one year the Pyramid Pile Cure
has become the best known, the safest
and the most extensively sold of any

THE PAYMENT OF PENSIONS
m
Hardin to Succeed Candler.
A circular letter has been mailed to
the leading politioiansand others in the
state, announcing the candidacy of
Hon. Mark Hardin for secretary of
state. Tho letter is as follows:
“Atlanta, Jan. 4,1808.—My Dear Sir:
Being satisfied that the present incum
bent of tho office of secretary of state
will not bo a candidate for re-election,
I hereby announoe aa a candidate for
that office.

an Early Date.
The Confederate veterans of Sumter

, ro ^untied to reoeivo pensions from
the state will soon be made glad by
this annual distribution of dollars, as
the payment of pensions will shortly
begin. There are three classes of pen
sioners on the rolls—the indigent
veterans, who are paid off first; the
widows and then the invalid soldiers,
who reeeive their pay last During
the next sixty days the state will pay
ont $600,000 in pensions. The last leg
islature appropriated an additional
$40,000 to the indigent pension roll.
This was necessitated by the fact that
1,846 names were added last year. .The
appropriation not then being sufficient
each of these received only $80. There
is no appropriation for back pensions,
bnt for 1808 all those on the roll will
reeeive the full amount The appro
priation for this class of pensioners is
$190,000.
Bond Injunction Case Fending in
Supreme Coart.
After being delayed by injnnctions
and other legal hindrances for six
months the bond matter now seems
near solution, and it is more than prov
able that the tangle will soon be
smoothed ont by the snpreme court
and the needed improvements finally
began. It is an end devoutly to be
wished.
The supreme court convenes Monday
next, 10th inat. and an effort will be
made to bave the case passed upon
soon aa possible. It is not improbable
that a decision may be reaohed within
a week or two. ^
The proposed bond issqe was beset
with many obstacles and a determined
fight made against the city conndl.
Injunction proceedings were instituted,
but when the petition was heard be
foro Judge Littlejohn nearly two
months ago a permanent restraining
order was refused. The petitioners, at
a later date, appealed the case to the
"supreme court, wnere it now rests.
As will be remembered, the taxpayers
voted upon the bond question on two
separate occasions, each turns the result
being largely in favor of bonds. Bat
the other side foaght the issue, and
tbo matter is still pending in the courts
for solution.
Tbo city council, m>on petition of nu
merous taxpayers, ordered an election
for bonds in July last, proposing to
spend $35,000 in various improvements,
the need for which was and is still ap.
parent. The proposed issue extends
over a period of thirty years, and can
bo sold to great advantage as soon as
the pending litigation is settled.

FARMERS BRING A FEAST.
Plenty in the Country to Eat and To
8pare-
A casual glance at the many country
wagons drawn np along the business
streets Saturday would have convinced
the most skeptical that our's is a land
of plenty and flowing with milk and
honey. Nearly every farmer brought
in aometbing to sell, if no more than a
load of fat pine, though others brought
a great deal more. There were whole
wagon loads of old bnt toothsome “bine-
stem” collards, hundreds of bnsbels of
Iiotatoes aud turnips, quarters of dress
ed beef, dozens of dressed pigs or
mutton for the local market, while the
baskets and backets of eggs, batter,
souse, chitterlings, backbones, sau
sage and other good things fairly made
one stroke his vest front in blissfnl an
ticipation. Yes, there's always plenty
to cat in old Sumter, the Eden of
southwest Georgia.

TO DISCUSS TAX EXEMPTION.
Business Hen to Take np Important
Matter Shortly.
A state convention of business men
is to meet in Atlanta about Feb. 10, to
discuss the proposed constitutional
amendment in regard to the exemp
tion from taxes of mannfactnring en
terprises. The proposed amendment
will give towns the right, by popular
vote, to exempt manufactories for ten
years. Many Georgia cities, Americas
among them, might have aeonred sev
eral manufaetnring enterprises but for
this obstacle, and it ia to be hoped the
movement towards a constitutional
amendment may resnlt successfully.
