E Those who have made the canvass ,aj R that in a number of cases entire state ■ delegations are shown by the canvass ro Yfavor a change in the law, notably Norm I Carolina, Tennessee. Kentucky, West Virginia and New Hampshire. Tue Minneaota count shows all but one fur a change; Uiobigau all but two; in Penn sylvania, 12 oat of 21 Republican mem- are counted in the canvass for a change in the law. Beyond oompleting the canvass, the 1 opposition to the civil service law is Ei taking no active steps at present, tbe w pOrpoee being to wail until tbe regular civil service committee of the house takes action on the bill before it pro- poses a modification of the law. Yonng Martin persisted in whispering in his class Professor Jons* called him up and gave him m severe flogging. On reaching home Mr. Martin examined his son and found stripes ou his back as large as a person’s finger. He went be fore a magistrate for tbe purpose of taking oat a warrant for Professor Jones on the 9harge of ssssolt and battery. Toe school trustees got him to desist on the promise that the matter would be investigated. I It is said the teacher completely wore bis 'Tod" out upon the disobedient child, and the condition in which he was found goes a long way unts Veri fying this statement. The affair has caused a great deal of xcitement in town among the acnool atrons and Professor Jones will hear rom them, it is thought, in a very uu- BUM* fashion. i*OB DEFIED THE MAYOR. times.
