THE 4MERICCS WEEKLY TIMES--RECORDER: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1898,
TWENTY YEARS FOR ROBBERY
BLACK BBUTE IS GIVEN A HEAVY
SENTENCE
Though It Was Fully Merited by His
Atrocious Crime—Another Charge
Still Pending.- Trial of Hop
kins Case.
Robert Henderson, a brutal negro,
goes to the penitentiary for twenty
years for highway robbery. If Riven bis
deserts for the whole of bis atrocious
crime bis stay in the pen would bavi
been very much longer.
Henderson, it will be remembered,
brained n little white boy, Willie
Chambers, at Christmas, and thinking
his victim dead robbed the body, even
stealing the little fellow's shoes and
suspenders. When tried last Tuesday
for the criino of assault with intent to
murder the jury quibbled over it for
nearly two d«y* three members wart
ing to convict him of assault and bat
tery only.
A mistrial resulted and? Henderson
was then | ut on trial for robbery, the
grand jury having returned two in
dictments in the case. In passing
sentence upon the negro Friday last
Judge Littlejohn is qnoted ns saying
that ho could not seo how the jury
could have made a mistrial under the
evidence adduced.
Lewis Clayton, on trial for burglary,
was found gnilty and will go to the
pen. Clayton belonged to the gang of
thieves who burglarised J. W. Rus
sell's store several months ago. Other
members of the gang are still at large,
and numerous other burglaries have
since been charged to them. Judge
Littlejohn has not yet passed sentence
ui>on Clayton.

who will conduct it next season. All

disposed of all property except this
pieoe of realty, and very likely will
apportion the cash ass'ts of the com
pany among the stockholders at an
early date.
A True Maxim.
'Nothing succeeds like success, is n
maxim well applied to Dr. Hull's
Cough Syrup, for this famous remedy
succeeds in curing every cuso of croup,
cough and cold which it undertakes,
and to this alone is due Us wonderful
popularity. Mrs. E. XV. Richards,
2214 E. Cumberland St.. Philadelphia,
Pa., states : “I have hud Dr. Hull’s
Cough Syrup on my bureau for the last
nine years, and have found it a certain
and safe euro for croup. I have also
found it efficacious in extreme mem
braneous croup, and would advise all
mothers to use it." Dr. Bull's Cough
Syrup costs only 25 cents, and yon
should bear in mind, that substitutes
■imply benefit the denier’s purse. In
sist on getting Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup.
MISTRIAL IN HOPKINS CASE.
Little Done at the Meeting.
The county commissioners met in
adjourned session Friday for the pur-
ose of discussing further the adoption
of the new rood law as recommended
by the recent grand jury. Beyond an
informal discussion of the measure
nothing was done, though the matter
will again be taken up at tbe regular
meeting in March.
A NOTED ATLANTA CASE
For fonr years I have been afflicted
with a very troublesome nasal catarrh.
So terrible bos its nnture been that
when I blew my noso small pieces of
bone wonld frequently come ont of my
mouth and nos'e. The discharge was
copious, and at tunes very offensive.
My, blood became so that iny general
health was greatly impairod, with poor
appetite and worse digestion. Numer -
ona medicines were used without relief,
until I began the nse of Botanic Blood
Balm—B. It. B.—and three IHjttles act
ed almost like magic. Since its use,
over a year, uot a symptom has re
turned, and I feel in every way quite
- restored to health. I am au old citizen
of Atlanta and refer to almost any one
living on Butler street, and more par
ticularly to Dr. L. M. (lillam, who
knows my case.

Jury Fails to Make a Verdict and is
Discharged.
After remaining ont thirty-six hourB
without arriving at a verdict, the jury-
in the case of the state versas Jesse
Hopkins, attempted arson, was dis
charged Saturday night by Judge Lit
tlejohn anil a mistrial declared. It is
understood “the jury stood 5 to 7," but
for what the world may never know.
Judge Littlejohn, it is said, atone
time considered keeping the jury here
uext week until that intelligent body
did maze some kind of a verdict, hnt
tin ally decided to let tbe case go iu a
mistrial.
Another jury, that iu the case of Ed
Williams, larceny after trust, also de
luded to hang out indefinitely, and
this too was adjourned last night and
a mistrial declared. At one time yes
terday three juries were “hung,” thus
practically blocking linsinoss, as only
one panel remained in the courtroom.
While Judge Littlejohn has not for
mally adjourned conrt on account of
probable chambers business, no other
jury cases will be beard before the
next regular term in May.

Police Chase the Negro Twenty
Miles and Recover Goods.
A Rich Haul.
A daring robbery, followed by
lively chase in which tin- officers pur
Biie thoir man twenty mites before cap
turing the stolen plunder, was the
sensation in local police circles Hat]
urday.
At an curly hour divers citizens re
ported at headquarters the fact that
their premises had been robbed tbe
night before and wagons, harness,
bpled bay, meat, sacks of potatoes and
sundry other articles stoleu. A wagon
was carried away from tbo premises of
Capt. John A. Cobb, and it was here
tbe police found the first trace of the
"wholesale'' thief.
Hookiog his own horse to the stolon
wagon the thief made the grand roands,
and at the homes of Messrs. John
Windsor, Frank Sheffield, George D.
Wheatley, W. A. Cobb and C. H.
Huntington, piled tbe wagon high
with stolen goods.
Chief Wheeler, Lieut. Cobb and
Marshal Foagin secured teams and fol
lowed the trail of the wagon out the
Oglethorpe road. The negro had se
cured a good start, Imt It's heavily
loaded wagon' gave the police officers
the advantage, and Into in the after
noon thoy came in sight of ibe fugitive
at a point three miles south of Ogle-
tnorpe and near Flint river swamp.
At sightof the officers the negro,
who proved to be John Brown, of this
place, leaped from the wagon and
dashed into the dense eanehrake.
Soveral shots weie fired at him hut
with what success is not known.
Tbe officers captured Brown's team
with all tbe stolen pluuiler. They then
went on to a honse where the negro
had been living and there secured a lot
of goods previonsly stolen. Included
in the list was a fine now open bnggy.
This, with the other plunder recovered,
was brought to Americus and is now at
the barracks awaiting claimants. It
was indeed a splendid piece of work
upon the part of the officers.
An inventory of the stolen goods in-
eludes one wagon, a bnggy, fonr sets
boggy harness, two saddles, a plow-
stock and gear, sacks of oats, potatoes
and cottonseed, baled ha.v, 100 ponnds
meat, three laprobos, buggy whip aud
a spring cot.
Of all diseases. Bright's disease of
the kidneys is tbe most dangerous, on
account ot its snbtle aud iusidions na
ture. Usually it is firmly fixed before
its presence is even suspected by its
victim. For this reason it is imj or-
tant that the treatment lie commenced
on the appearance of the first symp
toms. Even then it requires careful
treatment to stay its progress. Pains
iu tbe back, irregularities m the urine,
swelling of the limbs or abdomen,
should be the subject of instant .lives
igutinu and tbe proper remedy imiue-
niatly applied. Dr. J. 11 .McLean's

Cancer
Of the Breast.
Mr. A. II. Cranxby, of 158 Kerr St.
Memphis. Tciin., says that bis wife
paid no attention to a small lump which
appeared in her breast, Imt it soon de
veloped into a cancer of the worst type,
and notwithstanding the treatment of
the best physicians, it continued to
spread and grow rapidly, eating two
boles in tier breast. Tbe doctors
soon pronounced
her incurable. A
celebrated New York
specialist then treat
ed her, but she con
tinued to grow worse
and when informed
that both her aunt
and grandmother bad
died from cancer he
gave tbe case up as
hopeless.
Someone then re
commended S.S.S.
and though little hope remained, she
begun it. and an improvement was no
ticed. The cancer commenced to heal and
when she had taken several bottles it
disappeared entirely, and although sev
eral years have elapsed, not a sign of
the disease bas ever returned.

cars—bringing from tbe north two pro
