New York, Feb. 12.—The American
line steamer St. Louis, Captain Kalxlle,
which arrived today from Southampton,
reports the loss at sea of the Holland-
Ameru'i, line steamer Vcendnm, Captain
Stenger, from Rotterdam for Now York.
The passengers and crew of the Yoeu-
dam were saved by the St. Lonis.
At Quarantine Captain Stenger, of
the Veen dam, reported as follows;
“Tho Veendum left Rotterdam Fob. 3
with a general cargo, nine cabin, 1 lk
iteeruge passengers and 85 crew Ismml
for New Y'nrk. Had strong northwest
gales and liigh west seas. Feb. (!, at 6:17
p. in., ship’s time, latitude 49.16 nbrth,
longitude 20.01 west, the steamer struck
a submerged wreck or wreckage which
probably tore a hole in the ship's bottom
and broke her propeller shaft. We
found tliat our ship was taking consider
able water. Wo immediately set all
pumps lo work, hut notwithstanding
this the water gained on ns.
“In the meantime nil onr bouts wore
made ready in order, if necessary, to
leave the ship at a moment’s notice, be
cause site was now sinking rapidly by
the stem. At 1:30 a. m. we observed
the masthead lights of a largo steamer
bearing about east by south from us.
Wo nude signals of distress, on which
the vessel bore down on us. We then
decided, for the safety of tho passengers
and crew, to abandon the ship. The
vessel proved to be tho St. Louis of the
American line, hound from Southamp
ton for New York. We hniled her and
reported that our ship was sinking and
that we wished to be taken off. At 1:45
a. m. we commenced to transfer our
passengers and crew, using three bouts
of tho St. Lonis and ono of ours. Onr
men were kept at the pumps.
“At 4:53 o’clock Monday morning
everybody had been transferred to the
St. Louis. When the last bout left the
Vceiwhun was laboring very heavily nud
sinking rapidly by the stem.
"As the wreck was a dangerous ob
struction to navigation, we decided to
set her on Are, which wus done.
"On bourd the St. Lonis we were
warmly received and the captain and his
officers did everything possible for our
comfort.”
The passengers of the St. Louis passed
resolutions commending the gallant ser
vice and splendid seamanship displayed
by the officers and crew of the St. Lonis
in the rescue of the Veendara’s passen
gers and crow.
The Veendum was formerly the White
Star steamer Baltic. She wus built at
Belfast, Ireland, by Harland & Welff in
1876. She was a 4-masted barkentine
rigged screw steamer. She registered
4,030 gross and 2,767 net tons, and wus

motithsago. The ball was attended on
