Sheriff Allen, of Schley conuty, ar

charge of a negro wanted for the bur
glary of Capt. C. L. Peacock’s store in

All signs fail in dry weather and the
ranch needed rains come not. People
in the conntry are still hauling water
from ponds and streams, resulting in
much inconvenience and suffering.
Dave Dudley, colored, has been ap
pointed to a place on the letter carrier

Fruit growers who have carefully
examined the peach trees are of the
opinion that thoy have not been in

cool weather a good crop is now almost
assured.
The sales of guano thus far are 35 per
cent less than at this date last year, a
good sign, certainly, for a reduced cot
ton acreage. The farmers of Sumter
are not buying as much us they did
.last year.
Mr. B. W. Smithwick and family
have removed from their home on Bar-
low street to the farm recently pur
chased, located seven miles from the
city. Mr. W. M. Moore will occupy
the Barlow street residence.

So passed away the spirit of little
Ethel Louise Lingo into the morning
light through the dark portals of death,
a rare and radiant spirit, a flower of
beauty and purity as fair ns the heav
enly asphodels.
The death of this baby girl last
night at (I o’clock was a fearful shock
to her loving nnd devoted parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Charles Lingo. Fourteen
months ago today the little darling

The board of county commissioners
met yesterday morning for tho pur
pose of derisybg and putting in effect
some plan for working the public roads
that would prove more satisfactory
than the system now in vogtte. Ev
ery member of the commission was
present, the session lasting several
hours.
As a result of their deliberations it
was decided to appoint a superintend
ent in each of the nine districts of tho

Half Dozen Applicants for Office of Oil
Inspector.
It is understood thnt at least a half
dozen applicants for the position of
local oil inspector have announced,
and as the' existing vacancy will he
filled within two or three weeks the
subject is one of interest among the
friends^of thoso who seek the appoint
ment at the hands of Commissioner
Nesbitt. Among tho names mention
ed ure Messrs. D. C. X. Bnrxhnlter,
John A. Cobb, P. H. Williams', W. D.
Haynes, Lynn Fort, and perhaps one
or two others who have not tally made
up their minds to enter. The appoint
ment will be made some time in March,
and is for a term of two years.

mutation tax was fixed at $2. In futnro

Houses Lost by Fire Monday to Be
Replaced.
Mr. W. M. Kidd, who lost his grist
mill and cotton ginnery by fire early
Monday morning, was in town yester
day arranging to rebuild the houses
dollar and the loss, therefore, fell
heavily open him. Besides the houses
bnrned, two hales of cotton and 700
bnsbels of cottonseed were likewise
consumed. It is now believed the fire
was accidental.
Supreme Court Will Soon Consider
Bond Case.
The caao now pending in the supremo
court to prevent the city council from
issuing bonds in the sum of $65,000 for
public improvements, will soon be dis
posed of. In fact, it is expected that
tho matter will be taken up within the
next two weeks. The people voted in
favor of 1 toads in August last, but liti
gation has delayed the issue of tho
securities very considerably. The
bonds will bring a good price when

Death of Ben'j. Buchanan.
Mr. Benjamin Buchanan, a well
known and highly esteemed citizen of
Snmter county, died Monday morning
at liis home near Friendship. Mr.
Bnchanuu was about 00 years of age
and a wife ami large family are left to
monrn hi* loss. He was a brother of
the late A. J. Bnchanan, of this city.
