The populists of Sumter county will

A meeting of the populists of this

ness, inclndiug the electiou of delegates
to the convention.
The representatives from Snmter
will be Messrs. H. H. Glover, George
W. McN'eal, John Clopton and Wil
liam Pilcher.
In the discussion of gubernatorial
‘‘possibilities’’ Judge Hines was easily
the favorite, and the Sumter delegates
will give him a hearty support. The
platform of the "middle-of-the-road
ers” as enunciated in the St Lonis con
vention, was strongly re-affirmed in
the meeting Saturday morning.

permanent county chairman, and .T. G.
Hhockloy secretary for the ensuing
year. Tho same executive committee
was rc-elected.
DEATH OF CAFT. HARXETT.
DEATH OF MR- WRIGHT BRADY
Fused Away Thursday After a Long
Illness.
Mr. Wright Brady, one of the be*t
known residents of Sumter county,
died ou Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock
at his home near Leslie. While not
unexpected, the death of Mr. Brady
will be generally regretted thronghout
this part of the state where he has al
ways resided and was widely known.
The funeral exercise took place
Ho’cloek Friday afternoon at Oak Grove
cemetery, conducted by Americns
Lodge No. 13 F. A. M. and Camp Sum
ter U. 0. V. -
In tho doath of Wright Brady Sum
ter county loses a valuable oitizen and
one who has often represented her in
affairs of state, llo served in the leg
islature from IH80 to 18811, and in 181)2
was again elected to thnt body. He
was the author of a number of impor
tant measures while in tho house and
ever served faithfully the interests of
his county aud state.
Mr. Brady was born in Americns in
1844, but for many years past bus re
sided ou his farm near Leslie. He was
devoted to agriculture aud made a sue
cess of hiB avocation. A wife, four
grown sons and a daughter survive
him, and to these the sympathy of
many friends will be extended.
DOGS PHASED THE TAILOR
And After a Ten Mile Rnn He Ii
Brought to Bay.
There is one man, at least, who has
the utmost confidence in the stioking
qualities of the pack of hounds kept at
the county jail when put on the track
of a fugitive. This fellow led the dogs
a merry chase of ten miles Saturday
morning but was finally "treed" aud
captured near Sumter City.
The fugitive, an itinerant tailor hail
ing from Cordele, escaped from the
street force where he wns doing time
for a plain little drank, and headed in
the direction of Key West or Havana.
Chief Wheeler, with Deputy Sheriff
Bell and Marshal Fcagin. put the
hounds on the fellow's track and away
they went with a yelp and a bound.
Deputy Bell followed the dogs afoot
and for ten miles kept close bchiud
them as they followed the track over
field and through woods and brake.
The two others rode in a buggy aud
kept well in sight of the procession.
Tho trail lay along the Central rail
road track for several miles, the fugi
tive passing dozens of poople and two
trains as ho sped southward. The
dogs overtook him at Sumter City, and
lie is now in the county jail with the
charge "escape" opposite his name.
A NOTED ATLANTA CASE.
For four years 1 have been afflicted
with a very troublesome nasal catarrh.
So terrible has its natnre been that
when I blew my nose small pieces of
lione would frequently come out of my
month and nose. The discharge waa
copious, and at times very offensive.
My blood became so that my general
health was greatly impaired, with iioor
appetite and worse digestion. Numer
ous medicines were used without relief,
nntil I began tho use of Botanic Blood
Balm—B. B. B.— and three bottles act
ed almost like magic. Since its use,
over a year, not a symptom has re
turned, and I feel in every way quite
restored to health. I am an old citizen
of Atlanta and refer to almost any one
living on Butler street, and more par
ticularly to Dr. L. M. Gillam, who
knows my case.

One of Sumter's Best Citizens Has
Passed Away.
Capt. Joseph E. Markett died at 8:4'>
o’clock Friday night at the homo of Mr.
Clark, on Priueo street. Death was
the result of a stroke of paralysis re
ceived ou Wednesday last, aud though
the end did not come for more than two
days thereafter the patient was never
conscious after receiving the fatal
shock.
The funeral services took place at
Providence Primitive Baptist church,
□ear Bottsford. Saturday afternoon.
In the death ofCapt. Joseph Markett
Snmter ronuty sustains the loss of one
of her most worthy and esteemed citi
zens; a man of unimpeachable iutegri-
y and honorable in the highest degree.
His career of 63 yearB was as near
without blemish as it conld be made,
nor is there one who can say aught
against him. The loss of such a citi
zen is indeed to be deplored.
At the beginning of tho war he went
to the front as as a private in Cornpa
ny A. 12th Georgia Begiment, and
through bravery was promoted to the
rank of captain. A truer, braver sol
dier did not fight beneath the folds of
the Southern cross.
For several years ho engaged in ag-
ricultnral pursuits, though serving
one or two terms as sheriff of this coun
ty. Later ho engaged iu teaching
school, and wns also employed in the
warehouse business here. Capt. Mar
kett never married, and his surviving
relatives are a sister, Mrs. W. S.
Moore, and six brothers, Messrs.
Stephen, Frank, George, Zimri, Sam
uel and Newton Markett.
The whole people of Snmter county
will join in their sorrow at the death
of this good mau.

The Cause of the Disaster Will Be
Known In Short Time—Cubans Offer
tu Show Gratitude by Carrying the
Dead Americans on Their Shoulders
to the Cemetery.
Washington, Feb. 18.—The first no
tice to reach the navy department this
morning from the scene of the great na
val disaster at Havana was a belated
telegram of last night's date from Crp-
tain Sigsbeo, reading ns follows:
"Nineteen of the Maine’s dead were
buried this afternoon with great civil,
ecclesiastical, naval and military cere
monies and with all of .the resources of
Havana brought into requisition. The
Spanish government, under express di
rections of General Blanco, the bishop
of Havana, General Parrado and Ad
miral Mnnterola and the mayor of Ha
vana took complete charge of all ar
rangements.
The bodies were first laid in state in
tho building of the city government nt
Havana, whore they were covered with
floral and other emblems suitable to the
occasion which worn presented by offi
cials and other persons of Havana of all
shades of political opinion. They were
escorted to the cemetery by representa
tives of all the military, naval and civil
organizations and foreign consular offi
cers and through a vast concourse of
pcoplo spreading over the ronto.
"General Lee, myself and officers and
men of the marine now here, together
with Licntenant Commander Cowles
and members of the Fern's crew, were
given special carriages and conveniences.
Ground for the burial of all the Maine’s
dead had been presented by General
Blanco and the bishop of Havana in the
beautiful cemetery or Havana.
“The utmost sympathy aud respect
has been shown. I am informed by the
authorities that this is tho second in
stance only of such a demonstration hav
ing been shown to the foreigners iu the
history of Havana. It is inconceivable
that a greater demonstration conld have
been made, to me, personally. A gnat
number of people have expressed sym
pathy for tho Maine mid for tho United
states government aud people. The re
mainder of tho dead must, per force, be
buried with brief ceremony, which will
be conducted by ourselves, but the care
nnd preparation of tho remains will ho
with the Spanish authorities.
About 40 in addition to those buried
have come ashore today. Very few nre
now recognizable. Even in tho caso of
some of those who are hurt, but livo,
recognition was difficult. I have not
for a moment lost sight of tho grief of
tho families and friends of the members
of my erew, but I beg tho department to
explain to them that it is impracticable;
in fact, imprissible to send the bodies
borne. Facilities are lacking and era-
lxilmcnt is nccccsaury to secure ship
ment under the most favorable condi
tions. Emlalment is only imperfectly
done here. Will wire all coses of iden
tification.
"I maintain organization among my
small force here, but it ran be woll un
derstood that the execution of the work
with which wo ore charged is one of
much detail and difficult of execution.
It is believed that all of the deinrt-
incut's telegrams have reached me. I
am deeply grateful for the helpful scuti-
meuts and directions telegraphed by tho
president and tho department.
“I have tho earnest help of all tho
officers of the Mnino now here, which
was to be expected under all circum
stances. The flags of all vessels, naval
aud merchant, iu Havana harlior, have
been at halfmast yesterday and today.
Shall send Mangrove back to Key West
tomorrow with eight wounded. Will
wire names later.
Dr. Clcndciining of the army will
remain with the wounded. Assistant
Surgeon Spearc also came with the Man
grove, but will be detained here on beard
tbo Fern to accompany others of tho
wounded wheu they are ready to lx*
removed.
Will pnt some divers nt work tomor
row. Divcra requested of Admiral
Sicard will be hero Saturday morning
by the Olivette. Recovery of Maine's
battery impracticable, except by regular
wrecking outfit."
