MR. LEWIS ON BANKRUPTCY.
Georgia Congressman Opposes the In
voluntary Feature.
Washington, Feb. 19 —Congressman
Lewis of the Third district was the
only Georgian who spoke during the
discussion of the bankruptcy bill in

contended would give to creditors more
than their just duos and would putin
the hands of the federal courts too
much power. He said that he would
vote for a bill providing for voluntary
bankruptcy, because he believed that
would be bnt justice to a great many
honest men who were entitled to relief

the past week, leaving ruin and de

the value of many thousands of dollars
was swept away in a momont by the
devouring element.
A portion of tho trip was made by
buggy and a tetter opportunity thus
afforded Mr. Roney to estimate the
damage doue by the flames, but even
this was impossible, as in some sections
the fires burned over, thousands of
acres of magnificent pine forests and
farming lauds.
When Die flames would reach a for
est that had been “turpentined" the
awful graoduur of the scene could nev
er be forg >t’eu. The flumes would
leap even to the top of the stately
pines, and flying embers were hurled
through the air like meteors. The
sky would be darkened by the denso
smoke, rendering travel both difficult
anddangenus.
Miles of fencing and a ’numbor of
farm bouses were swept by the angry
flames tbut raged through a dozen
counties.
