Memphis, Feb. 20.—The Memphis and
Charleston railroad, extending south
east from this city to Stevenson, Ala., a
distance of 299 miles, was sold at pnblio
ontcry at noon today. The Southern
Railway company bought the property
at the upset price o' $2,WO,OX), there
being no other bidders.
The salo was made necessary liccnusn
of default in payment of interest on tlio
road’s bonded debt.

officials seized the immense distillery,
capacity 400 gallons per day, and war.

known whisky men in the state.
Daniel is a man of means, tho distil
lery is an extonsive one and tho seizure
is tho largest ever mado in tin's state.
Tho warehouse contains 8,GOO barrels of
whisky.
The charges against Daniel are tho
Illegal removal of whisky and tho reuse
of stamps. In taxes to tho government
i this distillery pays about $100,000 an-
anally. No arrests have been reported
Assassination Is Attempted.
Prescott, A. T., Feb. 2fl.—Lieuten
ant Cordicr of tho Cuban army, who is
hero with Captain Mahoney for tho pur
pose of raising funds to aid tho insur
gent cause, narrowly escaped death at
tho hands of on assassin last night. An
unknown man took a shot at tho lieu
tenant and then fled, Cordicr tired two
■hots at the rctruuting figure, but failed
to stop the mmi. Lieutenant Cordicr
says that a similar attempt wils made on
tho life of Captain Mnhouoy a few
months ago, while they were in Mon
tana.
All the Jurors Well Again.
WlLKESBAttttK, Pa., Feb. 24.—All of
the jurors in the case of Sheriff Martin
and his deputies, on trial for shooting
strikers at Lattimer. were in good health
again today. Tho prosecuting commit
tee today issued an apjieal for funds for
the further prosecution of tho ease.
Superintendent Fred Zorby was put on
the stand for cross examination. The
only now featnre elicited was that ho
tola of the instructions given by Sheriff
Martin to the deputies not to shoot un
less their lives were in danger.

San Francisco, Feb. 20.—Tho mnch-

Steamrr Sinks Schooner.
Falmouth, England, Fob. 2G.—The
British steamer Strathlyon, Captain
Bailey, from Philadelphia, for Hamburg,
while proceeding up the channel, col
lided with and sank tho schooner Percy
of London off tho Lizard this morning.
The crew of the schooner were rescued
by a boat which lias luudcd them here.

Bills Favorably Reported.
Washington, Feb. 20.—The house
judiciary committee has made a favor
able report on the Henderson bill con
cerning the jurisdiction of United States
courts. The house committee mi patents
baa favorably reported the Corliss bill
extending the trade mark privileges to
casks, bottles and other receptacles.
A New Steamship Line.
Port Tampa, Fla., Fell. 26.—TU«
•learner Moscotte, of tho Plant system,
will make its first trip March 1. from
here to Port Antonio, Jamaica, touching
at Key West. Tho time between this
port and Jamaica it about 00 hours.
The line is to be permanent.

Greensboro, Ala., Fob. 20.—William
Scott, a negro, murderer of the Singlcy
family, waa hanged hero. Scott was
tried, convicted and sentenced to bn
hanged in only two boon. Scott pleaded
guilty and told the details of the hor
rible triple tragedy.

WOMAN KILLED IN A WRECK.
The i’lunt SyHtrm Vestibule Dashes
Over Hurtling Trestle.
Waycross, Ga., Feb. 20.—Tho north
bound vestibule from Jacksonville run
into a hurtling trestle aliout 12 miles
south of hero. Three coaches next to
the engine were wrecked and burned.
The engine passed over the trestle and
Engineer Henderson hurried to Way-
cross for assistance. A special train was
dispatched to the scene, carrying phy
sicians and surgeons from tho general
hospital of the Plant system, mid tho
city and local officials of the road.
The forests on cither side of the rail
road ill tho vicinity of tho trestle wore
burning, and the air was lurid with
smoko. The negro watchman from tho
milrcatl ten . nt Fort Madge, who dis
covered tho burning trestle, attempted
to signal tho engineer to stop.
Tho engineer could not see the signals
on account of the smoke until tlicengino
came upon the trestle. The train was itt
regular speed anil it was impossible 11
step.
Ono passenger. Mrs. Horton of Roches
ter. N. Y'., was killed, another danger
ously wounded and six wero slightly
hurt.

Walton county has indicted Colonel
James II. Felkor, representative of that
county in the legislature and one of tho
most prominent lawyers in Georgia, for
auboruutiouof perjury and false swear
ing in tho celebrated Poore insurance
case.
It is alleged that Fclker made a con
tract with Dr. W. II. Moss to pay $o00
for Moss to swear that Dr. Poore died
from nutnr.il causes and had net sui
cided. Poore carried Ho,000 in life insur
ance nud of that amuut all except (1,009
lias been collected.
